Looking at the High Court: Online Shoppers can be forced to pay sales tax reading: the issue from online shopping that is arising it when and who should be paying sales tax. Previously having sales tax on shipments if the company has a factory/warehouse in that specific state but that has now been overturn. Online shopping is a fast-growing business. The Government is having to try and keep up with the online world as it is a fairly new area that needs regulating. Online shopping is beginning to make large retailers shut down their traditional brick-and-mortar stores due to lack of foot traffic in the stores. If there are companies who still have traditional stores they often also have a strong online consumer group. With interstate commerce becoming as easy as a couple clicks, or even one-click on Amazon, the regulations are not as clear as traditional interstate commerce. The article even mentioned that if an individual was not charged sales tax when they made the purchase, they still should have paid it. (2/5 pages).

 

With looking at these online sellers: should the tax be paid based on their location or the location of the buyer? If someone is in Oregon buys a product from a company in Washington, should they pay the Washington sales tax or not be charged sales tax?
