Research Proposal

The aim of the research is to illustrate the significance of empowering mentally ill individuals and identifying better ways of helping and assisting them in achieving their life dreams and ambitions, just like the rest of the world. The research is aimed at answering the negative public perception that mentally ill people are a liability to the rest of society, even after receiving the necessary assistance. The mass media, social media, health organizations such as WHO, Psychologist associations, among others have been at the forefront in discussing the welfare of the mentally ill. The research is significant since it aims at illustrating the advantage of positively embracing mental illness instead of considering it a menace. It is evident from the past records that some individuals with mental illnesses have been successful in the past, for instance, Abraham Lincoln, J. K. Rowling among others, since they positively embraced their mental illnesses and changed the world. However, it is important to note that the stigmatization of the mentally ill is the main reason for the failure of a majority of them, and without the emotional, social, and physical support, their success becomes limited.

Thesis: The society regards mentally ill people as a liability even in the case they receive appropriate help. However, there are examples of successful people, who overcame their mental illnesses and became the best in their business, disregarding public opinion.

Hence, everyone should consider it a global problem and unanimously fight against it.

· Mass media support stigmatization, presenting to the public narrowly focused stories based on stereotypes. In the majority of telecasts in which it is about mental diseases, the cruelty is presented as a basic element.

· The study of Odenbring investigates the approaches that school authorities in two urban institutes in Sweden and the native security officers use to define their understandings on satisfying the requirements of students suffering from drug abuse and mental challenges. The reference is vital in offering the empirical evidence that the treatment and diagnosis of mental illnesses early in life can save the loss of lives later in the advanced life stages as well as prevent the development of violence and negative attitude to life in those who have mental disorders.

· Here it is also worth mentioning the research of Gordon, M., S. et al. which focuses on the effects of mental disorders treatment. The assessments are done after three months and six months, and after combining the two methods, the article highlights the evidence of the presence of the depressive disorder and the RADS score at the end of the study. The study is important or individuals to look out for the earliest clinical symptoms of mental illness to avoid any adverse long term effects.

· Speaking precisely about depression, it is observed that musical therapy can be an effective way for this mental disorder treatment. Musical therapy is used for the treatment of depression in various ways. In this case, the therapist uses clinical methods for communication with the patient for emotional understanding. Additionally, the study by Jackson explains how such type of treatment can be applied effectively.

· Finally, Monet in the article elaborate the thought that people’s with mental disorders productive lives emanated from revealing their situations and choosing to focus on the positive side of life, which aligns to this study’s objectives. For instance, the article describes Jim Carey, a renowned comedian who opened up on depression and used spiritual advice, drug and alcohol avoidance, and visual hobbies art to overcome his situation.
