Writing Project 2—Posting Analysis

Length: However long your posting happens to be (since you’ll copy/paste your posting from the Internet into Word) and Google Docs comments, analyzing features relevant to WP3 and 4.

Format: Job Posting with comments

Scenario

You’ve located a job/internship posting that you think you’d be a great fit for. Before tailoring your application materials, you decide to analyze the posting’s requirements and wording.

Task

Analyze how your posting will influence your composing of WP3. You should use at least 7 Google Docs comments (10 total with your 3 PAT comments) to comment on:

· Requirements specifically you meet, and what evidence you’ll supply in your WP3/4 resume and cover letter to specifically prove this

· Requirements you don’t meet, and how you’ll spin your experiences to try to meet them

· Your personal reaction to aspects of the posting that signal company culture

· Euphemisms, platitudes, or red flags you want to make yourself aware of as an applicant

· Any other compelling points of analysis that would influence your WP3/4 writing

Double-check your comments. Many a sad student has closed their doc or shut down their PC without clicking the blue “comment” button to save their comments. Also, as professional writing, your comments should use complete sentences and correct spelling/punctuation.

Considerations

1. Your analysis comments are the purpose of this WP. WP2s without comments will earn no credit.

2. Refer to your notes from our job posting analysis. Portions of chapter 5 may also be useful.

3. PAT applies to this assignment, too! Let’s try to analyze the posting’s writer’s PAT.

· What’s the posting’s purpose?

· Who is the posting’s audience?

· What tone and style does the posting use, and why?

· Neglecting PAT costs you 10 points.

4. Do not skip WP2. This WP demonstrates that you’ve either located a new position or have performed a new analysis on a position you’re currently applying for. Skipping WP2 means you can’t earn credit for WP3 or 4.

Writing Project 3—Annotated Resume

Length: No more than 1 page, and includes Google Docs comments connecting your WP2 analysis to your resume composing choices

Format: Google Doc, or Word if necessary but not PDF (we can’t leave comments on it)

Scenario

You’ve located a posting for a job or internship that you think you’d be a great fit for. You’ve analyzed the posting and are ready to compose your resume.

Task

Create a new resume tailored to the analysis you performed in WP2. Use comments to annotate where your analysis impacts your rhetorical choices. Note that effective resumes will

· Use formatting that is both conventional (similar to that in the POSSE Style Guide), and visually attractive

· Employ bullets using the guide’s three-part structure

· Feature 7 comments (10 total with your 3 PAT comments) connecting your resume to your WP2 analysis. Annotations are vital to this assignment; resumes without them won’t receive credit.

· Display a near-perfect level of sentence-level correctness

· Fit to one page, or earn no credit—check that your resume looks the way you want it to before submitting.

Considerations

1. See chapter 5 regarding resumes in SWW.

2. Remember PAT! Neglecting PAT costs you 10 points.

3. Are there places where you should depart from SWW’s advice? How do you know?

4. Even if you already have an existing resume, in what ways does this posting necessitate that you revise?
