CRM201 Crime Prevention and Policing – Review/discussion questions

and post-workshop resources. (2020 Singapore KAPLAN)

Lecture (Four) - Part 1) ’Connecting the dots: A framework for responding to crime problems, & Part 2) ‘Super Controllers and Prevention’ Part (1)

A. In considering the principles of ‘Crime Script’ theory (i.e. a crime just like the script of a play requires sequential stages and tools which are the props) how might you use these principles to disrupt the following crimes;

• ‘Graffiti’ – i.e. teenagers using spray paint to paint ‘tag’ the sides of buildings or trains...? (as per script theory – think of the stages of the crime and the tools necessary for possible intervention points in which you could stop this crime occurring and/or make it more difficult to undertake)

• ‘shop lifting’ (stealing concealable goods from a supermarket) inside of a backpack, overcoat or baby pram)

• ‘underage drinking of alcohol’ – by persons using ‘fake’ identity information to gain access to licensed premises that serve alcohol/liquor

B. Why might an ‘owner’ allow a crime to develop and or continue...? (*consider 21 to 25) of your lecture slides.

C. The lecture slides noted that there were three types of crime facilitators – i.e. Physical, social and chemical...! Please think of three crimes where these facilitators would assist the commission of the crime. You might for instance think of what would assist in making a burglary successful, a graffiti of the side of a train and an assault and robbery...!

Part (2)

A. What is a super controller…? What are positive and negative incentives…? Please provide three examples of a super controller and argue what circumstances makes them a ‘super controller’

B. What are 6 examples of the types of powers that super controllers can utilize.?

C. Can you think of new examples of super controllers arising out of the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic ...? your example can be from any jurisdiction/country.
