Decision-Making and Problem-Solving Worksheet
Directions:
In this assignment, you identify a problem you currently face and use the concepts of logical decision-making to generate solutions.
1. List the 4 keys for logical decision-making.
To recognize you face an important decision
To accurately identify alternatives
To logically evaluate alternatives
To have self-discipline in implementing the best alternative
2. Identify a problem you need to solve.
Identify and describe below a problem you are facing that is within your control to solve. Be sure to include enough detail so your faculty member has enough context to determine if the solutions provided later in the worksheet are appropriate. (50-100 words)
One of the problems that am currently facing is heavy use of my smart phone. Lately, I have noticed that I spend a lot of my time just scrolling on my phones screen. This has reduced my concentration on other things since most of the time am usually navigating through different applications.
3. Review Ch. 10 and list two potential failures that can occur when identifying alternative solutions.
Having unrealistic thinking
Having a narrow scope of alternative
4. What two forms of irrational problem-solving are discussed in this week’s text reading?
Problems for which our response will have obvious long-term consequences. Problems whose long-term consequences must be discovered
5. Keeping in mind the need to avoid the potential challenges you identified in #3 and #4 above, create three possible solutions for solving the problem you are facing.
Solution #1 (25 to 50 words)
One the solutions is to develop a schedule of using my phone. This involves setting alarms and at different intervals on which I should check my phone. The intervals should increase with time.
Solution #2 (25 to 50 words)
The second solution is to turn off all the push notifications in my phone. This is by ensuring that I will not be distracted by notification from the various applications in my phone.
Solution #3 (25 to 50 words)
The third solution is to remove the most distracting applications from my phone and ensuring that the ones that are important, but distracting are removed from the home screen.
6. Evaluate identified solutions.
One way to determine which solution is best is to list advantages and disadvantages of each potential solution. As you consider the advantages and disadvantages for each solution, think carefully about the positive and negative consequences of implementing each.
Briefly describe at least two advantages and two disadvantages for each solution.
|
SOLUTION #1 |
|
|
ADVANTAGES |
DISADVANTAGES |
|
(25 to 50 words)
1. By developing a schedule, I will ensure that I limit my time and have a plan to use my phone. It will remove the unnecessary times that I touch my phone |
(25 to 50 words)
1. One of the disadvantages of creating a schedule is that it ensures that you will use the phone even if you do not have a need. |
|
(25 to 50 words)
2. Developing a schedule will ensure that I only use my phone to do constructive things only. Creating schedule will limit the time I use my phone therefore ensuring the little time I have is used for only crucial activities. |
(25 to 50 words)
2. Another disadvantage of creating a schedule is limiting the use of phone on critical issues. The scheduled may limit using the phone when you critically need to do something with it. This may affect your daily activities. |

SOLUTION #2 |
|
|
ADVANTAGES |
DISADVANTAGES |
|
(25 to 50 words)
1. One of the advantages of limiting notification is that it will ensure that am not distracted or tempted to touch my phone. Notifications increases the chances of checking your phone. |
(25 to 50 words)
1. One of the disadvantages includes not knowing what is happening. Notifications are important and may notify you of important things that you may otherwise forget. |
|
(25 to 50 words)
2. Another disadvantage of turning off notifications is that it will help to forget that you are in possession of a phone. This will greatly reduce the chance of checking what is happening. |
(25 to 50 words)
2. Another disadvantage of turning off all the notifications include creating a need to look whether there is something that has happened. This will make frequent looks at the phone to check of any activity. |

SOLUTION #3 |
|
|
ADVANTAGES |
DISADVANTAGES |
|
(25 to 50 words)
1. One of the advantages of removing all distracting applications is that it will minimize the use of phone. This will discourage the frequency of checking the phone and hence reduce the need to check the phone. |
(25 to 50 words)
1. One of the disadvantages include removing applications which could be very important in daily activities. This means that daily activities may be affected and therefore cause inefficiency in activities. |
|
(25 to 50 words)
2. Another advantage of the solution is that by removing apps in the home screen will reduce chances of being opened either intentionally or unintentionally. This will minimize the chances of using the phone for long time. |
(25 to 50 words)
2. Another disadvantage of removing some of the applications in the home screen include adding more time on phone searching them in other areas. This might probably increase the chances of getting into other applications which you did not intend to use at that time. |
7. Rank identified solutions.
Think about the advantages and disadvantages you listed in the table above. Rank your solutions from (1) most effective to (3) least effective.
|
RANK |
ENTER SOLUTION # from TABLE ABOVE |
|
# 1 (most effective) |
Developing a schedule of using the phone |
|
#2 (not as effective) |
Turning off all push notifications |
|
#3 (least effective) |
Removing distracting applications from the phone |
Explain why you ranked your solutions the way you did. Discuss why your highest ranked solution is the best way to the solve problem and why the others are less effective solutions. (75-100 words)
I have ranked my solutions from the most effective to least effective according to the advantages and disadvantages. Also, I have considered the practicability of the solutions. Developing a schedule of using the phone is the most effective solution because you can be able to limit the time you spend on the phone according to your desires. One can be able to exactly tell how much time is spent on the phone. The others are less effective since one cannot be able to exactly state what amount of time will be spent on the phone.
