Workplace Environment Assessment

A healthy workplace generates a win-win situation; employees benefit from a healthier lifestyle while employers decrease operational costs through higher productivity and less staff turnover. According to Clark (2015), workplace wellness is vital for most workers as it encourages them to work harder, and workplace offerings motivate them to continue working in their current employment. Based on the results obtained from the assessment, my workplace is civil to a great degree. In the institution, respect is considered one of the primary core values that drive workplace culture. Managers and other critical stakeholders in our institution encourage us to treat everyone as equals, deserving dignity and respect even if we do not like or admire them. Our workplace also embraces diversity by encouraging each employee from different backgrounds to share their unique talents. For example, during annual meeting sessions, employees from different ethnic backgrounds are encouraged to suggest ideas to improve cultural sensitivity at work further.

Managers or superiors are also are required to be open-minded, active listeners and acknowledge employees. For example, they can show that they acknowledge us through small gestures such as "hello" in the hallway or making some recognition in the meetings. Sincere acknowledgement is critically important at the workplace as it makes employees feel appreciated and that their contributions are respected (Stoddard, 2017). Despite these great features, at some point, I have witnessed uncivil behaviour in our workplace. Some of the employees had the habit of jamming the printer and letting others deal with it. As trivial as it may seem, this act is extremely frustrating, especially when you are under pressure to complete a task within the stipulated time. Therefore, workplace incivility can have damaging effects on morale and productivity.
