KENTUCKY STATE POLICE KYIBRS SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT (GILLINGHAM)

1452 HOURS -1518 HOURS I INTERVIEW WITH MATTHEW PETERSON:

I conducted a forensic interview with Matthew Thomas Peterson (juvenile). Matthew Peterson is nine (9) years old. I first asked Matthew Peterson if he knew what I wanted to talk to him about. He stated "the robbery." I asked him to ten me about the robbery. I asked Matthew who lived in the house with him. He stated he lived in the house with his grandmother, grandfather, his brother (Eion), and his sister (Raegan). During the interview, Matthew stated that a man wearing a camouflage jacket entered the residence and shot his grandmother. He also stated that he heard three gunshots. He stated that his grandmother stated "I'm dying," after she had been shot. He stated that the "robber'' also shot his mother, who must have heard the "robber" in the house. He stated the robbery happened the previous night sometime around 6 o'clock. He stated he had been sleeping on the couch in the living room when the "robber" entered the residence. He stated that the living room is located next to the kitchen.

After hearing his initial statement I attempted to clarify the time of the shooting. I asked Matthew Peterson if he had been sleeping when the "robber" entered the house. He stated he had been sleeping. I asked him what time he went to sleep the previous night. He stated he went to sleep around 2000 hours. I then asked him if he went to sleep at 2000 hours, how the shooting could have happened at 6 o'clock the previous night. He stated that he was not sure of the exact time, but that it happened shortly (30-50 minutes) before 0657 hours. He stated that after the shooting, he waited a short time to make sure the "robber'' was gone; he then turned on the television. He stated that when he turned the television on, the clock on the television showed the time as 0657 hours.

I then asked Matthew what he first remembered upon waking up. He stated he heard three (3} gunshots, and then he heard his grandmother screaming. He stated that he may have then heard one more gunshot. He stated he remained on the couch while the man was in the house. He stated he did peak over the top of the couch, and he saw the man standing in the kitchen. He also stated that the man asked where the money was. Matthew stated that he pointed down the hallway, to where he thought some money might be. I asked him if he could identify what race the man had been. He stated it was too dark to see well. He also stated that he was sure the man was wearing a camouflage jacket. .

He stated that the man also broke the glass on the back door, and he did not know how the glass got into his mother's room. Matthew then stated that after the man asked where the money was, and he pointed down to his mother's room, he thought the man went down to his mother's room. He stated that he was not sure, because he did not hear the man walking in the house. He stated several times that the man had "silent" feet, meaning he could not hear him walking. He stated that when the man left, he walked out through the back door. He stated that when the man walked out of the house through the back door, he heard a crackling, like someone had started a fire (this noise may have been the man walking over the broken glass at the back door). Matthew stated that he stayed on the couch throughout the incident. ·

I then asked Matthew if he knew where his brother and sister were at the time the man entered the house. He stated his sister was in her room, and that she was crying. He stated he could not remember where his brother was. He stated that his brother may have been on the couch sleeping with him, or he may have been in his own bedroom. I then asked Matthew why he started watching television after the man left. He stated that he thougt the man that did the shooting might have been his step-dad. He stated he did not want to call the police because he was afraid

that his step-dad might come back and kill them if he did. He stated that his step-dad had a camouflage jacket just like the one that the man had been wearing.

Matthew stated that between the times that the shootings happened at the time that he called ·the police, several people called the house. He stated one call was from his step-dad, two calls were from Sears and Roebuck, and two calls were from his grandfather. He stated that the second time his grandfather called, he answered the phone. He stated he told his grandfather what had happened, and that his grandfather told him to call the police. He stated that he then called the police

I then asked Matthew what his step-dad's name was. He stated Brent Smith. I asked him where his step-dad lived, to which he responded "Clarksville, Tennessee." I then asked Matthew when the man asked about the money, if his voice sounded like his step-dad's voice. He stated the man's voice sounded a little bit deeper.

I then asked Matthew if he knew where his grandfather was. He stated that .his grandfather is a truck driver and he drives a USA truck.

I then asked Matthew if he heard a vehicle leave after the man left the house. He stated he did not hear a vehicle and that he thought the man left on foot.

I then asked Matthew how long he had lived with his step-dad. He stated he had lived with his step-dad for about five (5) years. I asked him if he ever observed his mother and step~dad fighting. He stated that they "yelled and screamed" a lot at each other.

I then asked him if his step-dad had any guns. He stated that his step-dad was a military policeman, and that he did have some guns.

At 1518 hours, I stopped the interview to allow Matthew to eat. Social Services had picked up some food at a restaurant, and brought it back to post for the children.

At 1519 hours, I stopped the DVD.
