Skills, Knowledge and Competence
The Employability Skills used in work experience included the following as listed in the table
below;
Employability Skills Used During Work Experience
Team Work During work experience team work skills were

Time Management Time Management was one of the main skills
that were used in order to complete required

4
Shardaye Richardson (1992016260)- WOEP 3100
Problem Solving Problem solving was strongly used when a
challenge came into play to find solutions for the
challenges that occurred and also to prevent
them from occurring again.
Planning and Organization As a Human Resource Officer, you have to
properly plan your daily work schedules being
that some tasks deadlines are stick such as
payroll. If you were to miss an attachment during
payroll it can result in an employee missing that
pay period.
Communication Communication is a key skill for HR Officers as
they not only have to communicate with various
departments, they also have to listen to
understand information whether face to face or
via telephone. For example, during interviews.
Computer In being a Human Resource Officer one the main
devices that is used is a computer. Therefore you
have to have computer skills in order to carry out
work duties
Knowledge Base and Personal Skill Set
Being employed within the Human Resource Management field is one of my main goals to
achieve in the near future. Therefore, being given the opportunity to be an intern in the position
not only enhanced my skill drastically, it also gave me a feel of what to expect when I actually
go in the field itself which made me more interested in the field.
New Knowledge and Skills Relevant to my academic studies and future career goals
With the new knowledge and skills, I obtained during my work experience, it inspired me to
continue pursuing my Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Management as well as to further
my studies to obtain my Master’s Degree within the field. The new knowledge and skills I
obtained can also assist me with relevant tasks and duties that may be assigned to me in my
future job opportunities.
5
Shardaye Richardson (1992016260)- WOEP 3100
Strengths and Weaknesses That Were Uncovered
By partaking in the work experience it uncovered some of my strengths and weaknesses which
included the following:
Uncovered Strengths
• Enhanced my communication skills
• Ability to work under pressure
• Great Team Player
Uncovered Weaknesses
• Dealing with Criticism
To improve the uncovered strengths, I will ensure that I communicate with individuals more
effectively and more often as well as partake in more group related activities to ensure that my
strengths does not turn into my weaknesses in the end.
How My Thinking About Career Choices Has Been Influenced by Work Experience?
Partaking in the work experience enhanced my thoughts as it relates to career choices because
being given the opportunity to work in the field encouraged me to better educate myself by
attending relevant training courses and internships which will help to better my standards and
experience when entering the Human Resource Management field without a lot hassle.

Insights
Observations About the Organization and Professional Roles and Norms
From my point of view, the Human Resource Management Directorate Department is one of the
most important departments in government being that they have to work along with all of the
departments within the Turks and Caicos Islands Government Sector. Their main duties are to
hire workers, assist in pay roll for these new employees and also fire employees if needs be.
Therefore, without this department, government workers will not be paid and will cause the
government sector to experience a lot of difficulties.
How did the WE change your view of yourself and contribute to your professional
development?
Partaking in the work experience allowed me to obtain hands on experience within the field by
carrying out relevant tasks, which improved my knowledge and skills and enhanced my
professional development. It also gave me the opportunity to add to my experience on my
resume which will contribute to me being considered for a job within the field in the future.
Overall it encouraged me to not give up on my goals but to work to towards achieving them
instead.
What knowledge and skills (new or enhanced) were developed?
The knowledge and skills that were develop during the work experience included the following:
• Enhanced my team work skills
• Enhanced my communication skills
• Enhanced my ability to work under pressure
7
Shardaye Richardson (1992016260)- WOEP 3100
How did the WE affect your academic or career plans?
The work experience positively affected my academic and career plans because with the new
knowledge and skills that were gained and the experience itself, encouraged me to hit the ground
running to continuing enhancing myself within the field to get in the field even sooner than
planed and also with all I gained I can use on the job and also teach others.
How did you think, feel and act in a professional setting and how did others in that setting
think, feel and act toward you? What insights did you gain into your attitudes, values and
behaviours?
Having already being employed within the government sector, I have already gained the
professional skills that is necessary in the working world but I had to make necessary
adjustments to ensure that I be as professional as possible to best suit the Human Resource
Management Directorate Department. Overall the employees within the department were very
welcoming and helpful as it relates to teaching me about all of their daily duties and were very
professional while doing so.
Reflect on your approach to problem resolution in organizations. Explain the cause of any
problem experienced and each step used to resolve it.
Within the Turks and Caicos Islands Government Sector, if problems occur employees have to
be guided by the policies and procedures that are displayed in the Public Service Handbook in
order for the problem to be corrected accordingly. In the event that the problem solving actions
to be taken for a specific problem is not included in the handbook, employees are given the
opportunity to use their problem solving skills and come up with the best solutions.
8
Shardaye Richardson (1992016260)- WOEP 3100
How could you have benefitted more from the WE program?
Being that I was only allowed to do a few hours a day due to issues getting time off from work, I
could have benefitted more in the Work Experience program by doing it full time instead of
having to break up my hours.
Examples of How Workplace Performance Improved by Accepting Feedback or
Suggestions from Workplace Supervisors or others
My Workplace Performance improved by accepting feedback from the HR Manager and Officers
within the department because by me asking questions about different tasks or when I stumbled
across a challenge, I always received positive feedback and proper explanation of what was to be
done in order to overcome those challenges. This motivated me to enhance my performance as
an employee and also to remain open to asking questions so that I can be educated on tasks that
are unknown to me to be able to learn about it and teach it to someone else that was in the same
position as me when I didn’t know.
How teamwork skills contributed to the success of the work experience, and analyze how
teamwork by all workers affected the productivity at the work site.
Teamwork is very important in all organizations. Teamwork skills contributed to the success of
the work experience being that:
• All the employees respected each other and were professional while on the job.
• Employees were very helpful to each other.
• Employees worked together when having to come up with the best decision.
9
Shardaye Richardson (1992016260)- WOEP 3100
• By employees working together, it enhanced the productivity of the department being
that work was being done in a timely manner.
Discuss whether you would recommend this organization to continue in the WE program.
I strongly recommend the Human Resource Management Directorate department to continue in
the WE program because all of the employees are very helpful and willing to teach you and also
willing to go over what you may not understand.
Outcomes
WE Achievements
Partaking in the Work Experience enhances my knowledge and skilled within the Human
Resource Management field. Being that the employees were so helpful, I can now do HR related
tasks on my own and also teach others along the way. I was also able overcome some of my
personal fears when it comes to working in the real world.
Examples of Accomplishments and the Consequences of Your Work
The accomplishments were me being able to carry out numerous HR related tasks such as
processing employee pay rolls, hiring employees, filling out relevant forms and observing
interviews from a different aspect which is one of my weaknesses but that alone encouraged me
and taught me the do’s and don’ts when being interviewed.
Personal Qualities, Professional and Technical Skills Developed through Work Experience
During my work experience within the department, I was able to development personal qualities
and professional and technical skills which included the following:
10
Shardaye Richardson (1992016260)- WOEP 3100
It helped me to overcome my personal fear of being interviewed as I the chance to be on
the other end of the table actually observing interviews and giving feedback when
relevant.
It also helped me to manage my workload timing more efficiently as meeting deadlines
are vital in the position.
It enhanced my communication skills as well being that had to interact with individuals.

Personal Observation
The first observation of the Human Resource Management Department that I picked up on was
their willingness to award me the opportunity to complete my internship within their department
in order for me to be able to complete this course successfully. They accepted my request in a
timely manner, in which I appreciated.
The Human Resource Management Directorate department is a very good department to be a
part of as everyone was welcoming, willing to teach me the knowledge they gained over the
years and they were very helpful. Working in the department part time over the past five weeks
really enhanced my knowledge and skills with the Human Resource Management field. I was
also encouraged on a daily basis to not give up and to continue pursuing my studies. The work
experience also enhanced my interest of wanting to be in part of the field even more in the near
future. Employees were always professional, worked together for better productivity of the
department and they were all respectful to each other.
I was also able to observe that some the duties that HR Officers are assigned were very time
consuming such as:
Employee Payroll- which included HR Officers to gather information of each employee
such as their employment start and end dates, their basic salary amounts, if they were
entitled to any allowances etc. which are kept in the employees file being that they do not
have a computerized system and to also enter all of that information on Smart Stream for
each employee to ensure that they are paid in a timely manner and also received the
correct salary.
Recruitment and Selection Process- which included HR Officers to vet all incoming
applications for vacant positions and create a long list to send forward to the relevant
20
Shardaye Richardson (1992016260)- WOEP 3100
departments to do the short listing for persons to be interviewed. In the vetting process it
was very time consuming because officers had to go through their emails and search for
applications for each vacancy, print off the information and check to see if applicants sent
in what was required and also go through the office incoming mail as some applicants
submits hard copies instead of emailing their applications.
Interviewing Process- in this process, you may find that it can be time consuming being
that some interviews take longer than excepted and also sometimes the interview panel or
the applicant to be interviewed can run a bit late. The process of gathering a summary of
the interviews takes time also because officers has to complete a summary for each
applicant that was interviewed and also score the applicants based on their responses.
In some cases, the duties mentioned took a full working day or more for HR Officers to complete
which is why it is very importance for them to plan ahead and set strict deadlines. Over all, from
my experience and my personal observation of the Human Resource Management department is
that it is definitely a place where I can see myself being a part of after completing my studies.
Speculations, Questions and Predictions
Some of my questions that I asked during my experience was asked to get a better feel of the
department. These questions included:
What benefits are employees entitled to such as promotions, health care, financial
assistance etc.?
Is computerizing all of their information a part of their future development plans?
When will they be recruiting new officers as they have a lack in staff?
What are some of the future plans to increase productivity in the department?
21
Shardaye Richardson (1992016260)- WOEP 3100
Evidence of Developing Self-Awareness
In the department there were evidence of developing self-awareness being that all of the
employees within the opportunity were not only encouraged by managers to continue
working hard, but they also provide the following benefits that would help to enhance their
knowledge and skills.
Employees are given the opportunity to request and attend relevant training and seminars
that will enhance their skills and help them to make a better valuable contribution to the
department’s productivity
Employees are given the opportunity to receive financial assistance which includes a full
scholarship to obtain their associates or bachelor’s degree and also be given a grant
towards obtaining your Master’s Degree.
The department offers internship programs to assist college student with their studies.
Connections between personal experience and new information- what new knowledge has
been gained?
During my work experience I was able to gain new knowledge as it relates to Human Resource
Management work duties which included:
Hiring permanent and temporary employees
Taking part in the Recruitment and Selection Processes
Conducting and Observing Interviews
Learning how employee payroll is done.
Learning how vacation leave and allowances are calculated correctly.
22
Shardaye Richardson (1992016260)- WOEP 3100
Description of how participating in work experience assisted with development and
transition plan for completion of school and entering the workplace
Partaking in the work experience assisted me with development and transition planning for the
completion of school and entering the workplace because I had the opportunity to receive hands
on training which enhanced my skill, interest within the field and encouraged me to continue
pursuing my studies so that I can permanently work within the field to continue learning and
gaining more skills.
The work experience also gave me the opportunity to add the internship to my resume which
would be eye catching to future employers when I am applying for jobs.
SWOT Analysis of Agency
The Human Resource Management Directorate department has a number of strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and treats they include:
Strengths
The team has positive work attitudes.
Good working relationships with the various government department (Team Work).
They help to rebrand the TCIG employment sector.
The team is highly dedicated.
Weaknesses
Lack of staff which leaves staff feeling overwhelmed.
Lack of technological resources (still deals with a lot of paper based documents).
Opportunities
Training and Development Unit which provides relevant trainings for employees.

Recommendations on Improvements to Work Place
Some recommendations that I would give for the Human Resource Management Directorate
department to help to improve their work place includes the following:
To introduce a technological system so that files can be saved on a database to reduce the
amount of paper. This system will also be less time consuming than having to search for
files in a filing cabinet.
To recruit more staff to lessen the work load of current employees.
To offer counseling sessions for employees if needed.
