I loved the article “Yes, we literally mean abolish the police.” But not just because I agreed with it, but because it was educational and raised a lot of good points to bring up the next time I’m talking about the subject. I had known the fire police officers in the south were slave patrollers but this article taught me how in the north the police was first formed to stop the labor riots, adn help the rich. Because rich people are the real victims here. Kaba destroys the classic counter argument  of “if we abolish the police, how will we be safe?” by stating how most cops don’t have more than 1 felony arrest a year, and mostly respond to non criminal issues. Rapists hardly ever go to jail too. The entire system is broken. Additionally, BIPOC people aren’t safe right now, so again that point is mute. Kaba also thoroughly explains why reforming the police wont work, as it hasn’t ever worked any time it was attempted. The police are corrupt, racist, and usually evil and need to be abolished. It’s not a question anymore and hasn’t been for a long time.

The second article spoke to me even more personally. I moved to a small town upstate from Canada when I was 8 years old. My first concern when moving to america was guns and specifically cops with guns. I was a child and one of the few things I knew about America is that it wasn’t safe. The author describes the many evils of college police. And while i can see why uneducated people are concerned about abolishing all police, campus police is such a vile concept that it shouldn’t even be a conversation. College police were formed to protect the university from the students, not to protect the students. Also the fact that they have guns terrifies me. I didn’t have a police officer or a security guard in my high school and I am so grateful for that. Any time a police officer would be at the high school my first thought would be “there is a gun in my school”. Campus police also target BIPOC people more and it creates a dangerous environment at a place designed for education and community. In summary, police only make things dangerous.
