Work Day Agenda:

1. Collect and record sources if you have not done this already. You MUST use proper citation regardless of what style you want to use. You can figure out how to do proper citation through your textbook, or Purdue Owl (https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html)

a. Your topic’s Opposing Viewpoints page counts as one source, you need 5 others. They must be a mix of both sides of a given issue. They can be academic journals or newspaper articles.

2. Create some type of visual/graphic organizer of your issue. This could be an outline, a mind map, or any creative way of organizing information that makes sense to you (maybe you only think in drawings, if that makes sense to you, you can organize it that way). Proof of this organization must be turned in with your final paper.

3. Start writing: Your goal is to thoroughly explain the issue, it’s context, why it matters, and the various sides/opinions on it. DO NOT TAKE A SIDE! That’s for the next assignment, not this one.

4. Revise, revise, revise: Organization of this paper is going to be critical. It must make sense to a novice to your topic. Properly citing your sources is critical. Having a proper academic tone is critical (return to They Say I Say).

5. Make sure you’re not missing some critical viewpoint on your issue. If you’re writing about drug overdoses in American and you never explain the viewpoint of those who believe an increase of prescription pain killers is responsible for it, you are not doing a very good job explaining the true nature of this topic. Your issue might have more than two sides, that’s ok.

6. Length requirement: The final paper must be at least 3 FULL pages (that means you’re last line goes all the way to the bottom of the third page). Make sure your margins are 1” on all sides and that you are using a standard 12-point font. If you are writing over 5 pages you’ve probably chosen a topic too broad or you’re not being concise enough. Consider narrowing the issue if you’re having this problem.
