Unit – Phonics Skills – long vowel /ā/ followed by a consonant -e

Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds. (Common Core State Standards (CCSSI), n.d.a).

Activity 1: Mixed Up Word Worksheet

· Word Bank is listed at the top and the 12 words are scrambled up numbered 1 through 12 beside it. The goal is for the student to properly place the correctly unscrambled word beside the scrambled word.

Activity 2: Rainbow Roll and Spell

Materials Needed:

· Dice – 1 for each student

· Crayons – 1 standard 8 pack for each student

· Plan white sheet of paper for each student

· Vocab Bonus Word, Numbers 1-6 assigned to colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple and an example of a word created rainbow written on the board.

Instructions: Hand out plain white unlined paper, 1 dice and a pack of crayons to each student. Roll the dice and write the word in the color trying to make the shape of a rainbow. Continue until a rainbow is made of the word in all the colors. Advise it may take quite a few times in each of the colors depending on how big or small they write. After they have completed their rainbow, they are to lift it in the air for me to see and say the word loudly in the air.

Assessment: Students will take a spelling test to see how well they have progressed so far.
