Irregular Verbs

Latin has a few verbs that do not fit neatly into the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3IO, or 4th conjugations: they are irregular. The number of verbs and irregular forms may at first seem a bit overwhelming, but, thanks to your knowledge of grammar, you can break them down and isolate what’s new and different about them. This process will make dealing with irregular verbs much easier. As you move through this section, you will be given many charts—it’s a good idea to copy these into your notes and begin studying them right away. Though their conjugations are irregular, how you translate them is not.

 Section 1 Objectives

1. Conjugate and translate in all possible forms the following irregular verbs:

i. volo, velle, volui – to wish, want

ii. nolo, nolle, nolui – to not wish, to not want

iii. malo, malle, malui – to prefer

iv. fero, ferre, tuli, latum – to bear, carry, suffer

v. facio, facere, feci, factum (whose passive voice is irregular!) – to do, make (also: to become, to occur in the passive)

vi. sum, esse, fui, futurus – to be

vii. possum, posse, potui – to be able

viii. eo, ire, ii (ivi), itum – to go

2. Identify and apply in a proper context several Latin abbreviations, mottoes, and maxims.

3. Recall the sequence of events and basic themes of the Punic Wars.

4. Discuss the current geopolitical situation of the United States as it compares with Rome during and after the Punic Wars.

5. Recall and connect with English derivatives the vocabulary of Unit 9.

6. Read and translate Latin selections based on classical life and culture.
