Assessing the Current Status of Women in Policing: The Presence of the Past

A.  Introduction 

a. The role of women in policing is stigmatized, which stresses their status in society. 

b. Women have been entering policing since the 1800s, but their entries are limited due to gendered roles. 

c. There are several factors affecting the entrance of women into policing. (Das & Phillips, 2016)

d. The role of women in policing has been appreciated, but it is affected by male norms in our society. 

e. The topic is important to discuss because it will highlight a dimension of social discrimination based on different reasons. 

   B.   The focus of the paper - challenges in policing  

a. The research paper will highlight women's challenges in policing since the 1800s. 

b. They are being criticized based on gender identities and associated roles in our society. 

c. Policing is a male-dominated profession (M. Diaz & E. Nuno, 2021). 

d. Women face disproportionate challenges in policing. 

i)  Gender and race are two central factors.

ii)  Gender pay gap is one of the major challenges. 

iii)  They are hired to assist and help, not to lead (M. Diaz & E. Nuno, 2021). 

e. Lack of female representation in policing 

     C.  Literature Review 

a. Most research highlights gender differences as the biggest reason to pose challenges in policing (Prenzler& Sinclair, 2013). 

b. There are disagreements in the literature regarding designing an effective policing model to eliminate differences (Giwa, 2018, p.716). Literature defines the policing profession as a failed promise because of the inability to protect the community. 

c. According to Strobl (2020), the role of women in policing, juvenile rehabilitation, crisis management, and community protection is more appreciated than in male policing (Strobl, 2020). The research further argues that the lack of equal representation in policing hinders their opportunities. A women-oriented approach is required to address this problem. 

d. According to Das & Phillips (2016), to promote women's role in policing, it is important to reform the criminal justice system and law enforcement agencies. Women need equal representation; thus, their rights should be protected by human rights. 

e. A phenomenological study (Wilson, 2016) understands the differences between the theoretical perceptions of women in policing and the lived experience. The feminist theory explains the constructed meaning of women in society, which affect their presence in society.

   E.  Conclusion 

a. The role of women in society is stigmatized because of different challenges. 

b. Several challenges affect their role in policing. 

c. The literature highlights different causes behind the ineffective representation of women in policing.
