Women in the American Revolution

Women during the American Revolution performed crucial tasks. Before the war, women's primary duties in communal life were relegated to dependent roles and the domestic sphere. From 1776 to 1783, gender-centric duties were denigrated during the war, and women participated in supplying troops, organizing fundraising drives, working in fields and military camps, and tending to the children and wounded soldiers. The monograph by Berkin describes the women's ideologies during the revolution; the loyalist, the daughters of liberty, and the neutral daughters (2016). As a loyalist woman and with my husband at war, my typical day experiences are as explained.

As a loyalist to the crown, my day starts with great care of myself and my kids. My duties early in the morning include cooking for my kids and washing their clothes. In the backyard and the farm is chaos between the British army and the Revolutionist. I hang my clothes and get back to the house. I am worried about what my kids will eat if most of my farm produce is damaged because of chaos. My prayer is that the war ends soon. After the chaos is over, I got out and bought British goods and food for my kids as I hope one day, my husband will come back.

I live in isolation, and I lack neighbors to interact with and share my ideas. Most of them are "Daughters of Liberty," and the "Loyalists" who are minority were less organized (Berkin, 2016). My afternoon is full of fear since the Revolutionists can attack me anytime and take away my husbands' property. My household chores are many as I have to check the farm when there is no chaos. I have to ensure the farm is fabulous to ensure kids have food all through, despite the scarcity. I live in fear of being mistreated, and I hope that one day I will leave my community and join my husband.
