Course Project Milestone: Annotation Bibliography

The discussion topic was about abortion which has various views and is extremely controversial especially when making an ultimate decision. Various personal challenges are experienced when making a moral position on either side of the presented debate. For instance, if I agree and fully support abortion, that position places me under questionable circumstances. For instance, my beliefs are greatly challenged because on standard occasions, I would not support abortion. However, every woman has the sole power to make decisions thus should not be judged whether they decide to keep a pregnancy or terminate it. The present conditions might call for an abortion thus the woman cannot be judged for the selected decision that aligns to their interests.

Kantian ethics introduces an individual to view an action as moral based on the motivation that has instigated it. It means that instead of focusing on the consequences to make a subject right, the person analyzes the intention that pushes them to do that action. On the debate, abortion can be morally right after analyzing the intent that prompts them to take that path. For instance, the intention for subjecting the embryo under termination might be because of the mother’s life being in danger. The individual might be in a poor living environment and has no means to raise the child at that life situation. Therefore, a validated intention according to the Kantian ethics might make a wrong decision morally upright.

Fleming, V., Frith, L., & Ramsayer, B. (2019, July). Tensions between ethics and the law: examination of a legal case by two midwives invoking a conscientious objection to abortion in Scotland. In HEC Forum (pp. 1-25). Springer Netherlands.

Fleming et al (2019) talks about circumstances that might contribute to nursing practitioners refuting to incorporate their help on abortion patients. It means that they are extremely engrossed in their religions thus preventing them from indulging in abortion since they will have participated in convincing the patient to go through the termination process. The authors have ensured that they mentioned a case where some medical practitioners failed to support abortion and had to justify the case. The authors expound on the significance of allowing the nurses to stick by their religion. On one hand, the author agrees with the debate that health professionals should not be forced to support abortion if their faith and religion has a strong negative opinion. One of the suggestions given is releasing the patient and referring to other professionals who have not been tied by their faith. “To refer patients for such services to other practitioners.” The article is essential since it has all the information needed that would be of significant help in my research. It is an excellent recommendation to a reader analyzing the mystery surrounding abortion and religious beliefs.

Octavian, O. G., Ionescu, C., Lesnic, A., Filipescu, G. A., & Ples, L. (2018). Ethical and medico-legal aspects of the therapeutic abortion-our experience. Roman J Legal Med26(1), 82-5.

The article expounds on ‘therapeutic abortion’ meaning that an individual has sort for the required medical assistance in terminating the pregnancy.

The therapeutic abortion is instigated only when a mother’s life is under utmost danger

and one of the parties should be salvaged. The immediate assumption is that the woman

has developed medical complications and must be legally operated on to ensure easy

extraction of the embryo. “Voluntary interruption of pregnancy can be practiced

whenever two doctors of a disciplinary team attest, after giving their advisory opinion or

continuing the pregnancy in danger to the mother's life, whether there is a very

serious possibility that the fetus is born with a disease of special gravity, recognized as

incurable at the time of diagnosis”. Another assumption is that the woman will have

more children in the future when her life is preserved during the therapeutic

abortion.

I agree with the author’s line of thoughts especially because a woman will bear more

than one child in their lifetime thus should be given an opportunity. Therapeutic

abortion is the safest technique because the medical professionals have been trained to

safely procure the activity. The article has further provided various steps in therapeutic

abortion thus it is an excellent recommendation for a young woman with medical

complication and has minimal idea on what would happen during the procedure.

Therefore, the source is credible in my research since it is used as part of my references.

Eagen‐Torkko, M., & Yanow, S. (2021). The Critical Role of Midwives in Safe Self‐Managed Abortion. Journal of midwifery & women's health.

The article expounds on the difficulties faced when an individual fails to receive the abortion services from the medical institution and decides to sort another type of help.

The author has explained about midwives in the report and how they actively participate in offering abortion techniques out of the hospital context.

“Choosing to seek abortion care outside the clinical setting can also help people marginalized or harmed by existing health care systems to access needed care in a way that feels safe and empowering”. Most people rush to the midwives since they offer full services without discriminating or assessing the individual’s health and primary reason for instigating the abortion procedure. Eagen (2021) has provided information that I partially agree with. For instance, marginalized women will have another place where they can access such services and even at better prices compared to the medical institution. However, I largely disagree with the concept because self-managed abortion can be quite dangerous. Most of the midwives have been trained to be traditional doctors and have very minimal information about the human anatomy. Therefore, such individuals have no idea on what should be done in case the young lady profusely bleeds during the termination procedure. The article is significant in my research since it provides the required information needed about the safest type of abortions.

Gingrich, P. M. (2017). Improving Student Receptivity to Abortion Care

Education. Nursing education perspectives38(6), 350-351.

Gingrich (2017) talks about the most significant concept that has been ignored for an extended period. Nursing students are under training to be professionals and the author examines the significance of educating them about abortion. It is a controversial issue and all the students have their different views and perceptions regarding the matter.

However, it is right that they receive adequate training which will help them in embracing those women who have decided to undergo that procedure without imposing their morals on them.

One challenge that has been addressed by Gingrich (2017) is that the nursing students should not be kept away from that topic since they will negatively affect the client through imposing their values and opinions. I agree with the author’s thoughts because everybody has an entitlement to their actions. “Nursing education needs to include quality materials on abortion care in order to create educated providers and citizens”. Nursing students should show support and care to such a patient despite the moral or ethics surrounding the abortion controversies. The subject is significant to my understanding and view on various women that decided to take on pregnancy termination within my immediate environment.

Johnson, B. R., Lavelanet, A. F., & Schlitt, S. (2018). Global abortion policies database: a new approach to strengthening knowledge on laws, policies, and human rights standards. BMC international health and human rights18(1), 1-5.

The source expounds on some of the laws which have been developed for the abortion procedures. The government has been involved in policy development hence indicating that they have genuine care for women’s health. The article articulates on some of the laws that have allowed the abortion procedure. The woman must have provided her consent on the matter thus the health professionals preside over ensuring that the termination procedure has been successful. “Laws and policies on abortion should protect women’s health and their human rights.” Some states are against abortion and have developed prohibition policies and sampled some of the punishments which will be incorporated when the individuals will indulge in illegal abortion. Therefore, the article is essential in helping me understand how different states have reacted to the abortion concept.
