Hello Class and Professor,

Websites use cookies to basically personalize advertisements for your device. “This means that the cookies can follow the user as they visit other websites. Sometimes, the site with the advertising cookies does not display the advertisements but it can target users with advertisements elsewhere even after they’ve left the site” (What are Advertising Cookies and Targeting Cookies?, 2021). I’m on the fence about sending those targeted advertisements. Sometimes It's interesting to see personalized ads but other times it feels very intrusive.

Hello Class,

If you are a business owner, you understand that the social media platform will aid to your success in the branding of your business. So, what is target advertising it is a way to for businesses to market the collected cookies from your search bar and apply more helpful advertising. Businesses are looking for more creative ways to market overall, while making more attractive ways to entice the customers, you will notice the catchy emails and flash ads, that promote you to click on them. They have now incorporated text and 24/7 chat box customers support which is very limited. So, do I support this common tool? I think that I am on the fence, because apart from having a user secretly accept the cookies, it concerns me that not every site takes the information and uses it as intended. Also, the ads tend to pop up in the most random places which makes it seem like that you are possibly being watched. It’s helpful in a way, but than it does have an element of discomfort pertaining to the privacy settings. The settings can become set but how often do those setting stay in place? That is something that we need to consider when we are deciding accept the cookies or not.

I do think it is objectionable because of the amount of companies in the world trying to market their somewhat useless product. From experience, the amount of trends I have personally noticed while browsing the web on my personal devices versus my mother's devices for example, all are tailored to how we browse. Clearing cookies is as easy as 1-2-3; however, cookies are also used for authentication purposes which can have its benefits. I say this because if an attacker were to get your cookies and yes I know it does sound silly, they would be able to get access to your social media and other websites.

That is not the topic though and although there is a relationship to what I just mentioned, is companies using cookies to target ads. As stated before, yes. Imagine the lack of privacy even though your data is already getting zipped across the world at light speed. Browsers such as Brave can re-instate that privacy. "Brave blocks ads and trackers by default and is the first web browser to include a built-in cryptocurrency wallet (Pitchkites, 2022)." All-in-all, the browser you use to surf and search is all up to you, it is a matter of security that you would want to reconsider.
