INFORMATION THAT SHOULD GO INTO PROCESS RECORDING

FOR MICRO WORK

There are various formats for completing a process recording. The following is an outline that covers the major areas we want included within a process recording. Please utilize the template that follows for completing a process recording with an individual, couple or family client(s).

1. Description/Identifying information: The social work student’s name, date of the interview and the date of submission to the field instructor should always be included. Identify the client, always remembering to disguise client name to protect confidentiality. Include the number of times this client has been seen (i.e., "Fourth contact with Mrs. S."). On a first contact include name and ages of the client(s) you have written about. If client is seen in location other then the agency say where client was seen.

2. Purpose and Goal for the interview. Briefly state the purpose of the interaction and if there are any specific goals to be achieved, the nature of the presenting issues and/or referral.

3. Verbatim Dialogue (in the table below). A word-for-word description of what happened, as well as the student can recall, should be completed. This section does not have to include a full session of dialogue but should include a portion of dialogue. The field instructor and student should discuss what portions should be included in the verbatim dialogue.

4. Assessment of the patient/client/consumer. This requires the student to describe the clients’ verbal and nonverbal reactions throughout the session. Consider everything that is occurring such as body language, facial expression, verbal outburst, etc.

5. The student's feelings and reactions to the client and to the interview (in the table below). This requires the student to put into writing unspoken thoughts and reactions s/he had during the interview e.g. "I was feeling angry at what the client was saying, not sure why I was reacting this way…”. “ I wonder what would happen if I said such-and-such.”

6. Identify skills and/or theory/ conceptual frameworks used (in the table). The student should be able to identify what skills they used in an interaction, and/or what theoretical framework came to mind as they dialogued e.g. “I used the strengths perspective “ “I used the skill of partializing”

7. A summary assessment/analysis of the student's impressions. This is a summary of the student's analytical thinking about the entire interview and/or any specific interaction the student is unsure about. Include any client action or non-verbal activity that the student may want to discuss. (See Guided Questions at the end of the template for this section A-H)

8. Future plans. The student should identify any unfinished business and/or any short/long term goals.

Hello Mrs. Alice, I am Devaka, a student intern Social care manager, doing an after-effect with your municipal care assist manager here, Mrs. Destinee.

The client is astonished and feels like walking away from me because she has never seen or hold any conversation with me before.

I wasn't worried, and again, I wasn't impressed, but I understood and allowed to feel that way because we were strangers in her sight as she thought. I improvised a way of pleasing her first.

I used a strategy of effective interviewing and a skill of showing oneness with her in her situation.

Mrs. Alice, I am here to say hello to you all, including the children, find out how you are faring on with life, and offer additional services and guidance geared towards creating harmony between you and the father to your kids.

For a moment, the client I saw the client smile while looking at Mr. Warren straight in the face an impression that she was at par with my objective. I saw her struggle to look sideways for seats that could accommodate us.

I was impressed at heart and felt that my approach may have won her heart to now open up for me to narrate to me all I needed from her.

Family and systems theory of family violence, cognitive-behavioral, Social theory of family violence, and psychodynamic theory of family violence can all be used in this situation at once.

The client opened up and starting narrating to me all that transpired and how she has always been in a fight with her husband over very small issues in the house that could be avoided. She went ahead to say that most of her misfortunes with the husband always occur when there are problems of income, leading to strain in getting food for the kids. She narrated how the last fight they had that attracted us; the social workers, occurred and how she was injured to the level she is currently. Later, she said she was happy and believed we could help her solve it with her husband.

Carefully listening and observing the client, I saw the depth of agony and pain she had in her heart of living a life with nothing to enjoy as others do. She narrated a lot of such situations. When she finally spoke on confidence in us to solve her issue, she breathed out so hard, showing a sigh of relief.

Getting all those narrations from the client, I offered to be always passed over to monitor the progress of our mediation, and how she is fairing on, I again offered to persuade the management team within us to support one of her kid's fees to ease their burden if this could be a breakthrough to their borne of contention.

I used the skill of showing more concern to their wellbeing and the importance of her living together with her husband.

I comforted the client by offering some pieces of advice on how she can avoid being harmed if they engage in such a fight again but promising that in contacting the facilities and services after my visit, she would be able to get the additional help for her family.

The client was a little bit relieved and was now feeling a bit comfortable from a glance at her face and my psychological know-how on her following words. She supported all the appeals. She took our office contacts to have for any further consultation.

This was the best feeling that I had on that part of the conversation. I was so impressed by how she finally opened up and accepted my suggestions and showed a belief in my intervention to end her everyday violence.

I used societal conflict approach a sub section of Cognitive approach and motivational theory to handle this.

Our meeting ended here as I promised her that I would call her to know more about the latest developments in her home especially with the kids and, most importantly, to know how she is feeling before our next big meeting.

The client applauded us for coming into her case and offering all that assistance that was impending and again appreciated Mrs. Destinees' commitment to ensuring she is well lived by bringing me in as a third party in her case. She promised to call me in case of anything anytime that needs our intervention.

I was a happy fellow here, having imagined that we began as strangers but finally came to an agreement and got all the information I wanted. Another professional feeling that made me clapped for myself.

I used psycho-dynamic approach to handle this having realized all what could make us succeed

6). Summary Assessment/Analysis of the Session

A. Identify the stage of work with client/client system (i.e., pre-engagement, engagement, assessment, intervention, evaluation). Why ? The stage of work here is to ensure that there are continuous intervention and assessment for mediation purposes and to explore information since the previous visits with Mrs. Destinee didn't provide enough information for effectively intervening in the clients' situation.

B. What did you learn from the session that adds to your understanding of the client? I learned that lacking a means of getting food to the table can be a major cause of stress in men/women that can further propagate domestic violence.

C. What were the major themes of the session? Major themes here were to find a way to bring to an end domestic violence in this family by way of conflict resolution and offering any minimal assistance that can see this effort holds water.

D. What were the challenges presented during the session? One of the major challenges presented in this session is convincing the woman that they should continue staying together and, secondly, convincing her that one time they will stay in peace, happily without such cases.

E. What was accomplished during the session? During the session, I observed that children weren't physically affected by this act. Most importantly, I got all the information I needed for my intervention and conflict resolution in the presence of her husband in the next meeting.

F. What concepts or theories or interventions did you apply? And what were the results--what worked and what didn’t given the socio-cultural context of the client's presenting problem(s) and underlying issues?  I used a sub perspective or thought of cognitive-behavioral concept; Behavioral genetics to explain that this violence may be stress-propelled, and I also used a client self-absorbed method to narrate to me all that happened. I could give an ear and offer my support.

G. Explain how your interpretation of what occurred in the dialogue relates to the week’s lesson (ie. Week #2 – Engagement, Week #4 – Assessment, Week #6 – Intervention, Week #8 – Evaluation) In our conversation with Mrs. Alice, I had to improvise different approaches that could make me succeed and accomplish my purpose for the interview. This was a process that was to be followed carefully, and I am confident that our conversation was useful to the week's lesson, I engaged, assessed, intervened in the problem, and finally evaluated.

H. A summary of the student’s impression: For this case, I had a mixed reaction where at some point I was sympathizing with her situation, and at some other point I was so impressed by how she later accepted me and made me accomplish my mission on intervening in their family, approaching women to open up on their problems hasn't been an easy task especially now that I am still a student and I have not encountered through such cases and intervened previously. This encouraged, and at some point, I felt like I am in the right direction in my profession.

I. Questions for Supervision: What other approaches could I have used to make the client comfortable if I wasn't accompanied by a Municipal representative that's well known to the client?

7). Future Plans

This client has undergone a lot, to ensure that she doesn't go through this again, there is a need for organizing social education in the entire family. Together with Mrs. Destinee, we will ensure that the support I promised is put in practice as we watch our intervention's progress. Putting her close by giving her our contacts will help us to have constant watch and know-how of any problem and intervene where possible. When they become stable, we can focus on setting the strategic goals which they should achieve with our assistance. If properly planned, we can use the couple in teaching other victims of the same domestic violence.
