Designing Qualitative Research

Criteria for Evaluating the Quality of a Qualitative Research

A qualitative research design involves a market research procedure that focuses on obtaining data through open-ended and relaxed communication. Levitt et al. (2021) say it is critical to conduct a quality evaluation for effective qualitative research. Two criteria for qualitative research methodology quality evaluation are credibility and dependability (Stenfors et al., 2020). Credibility requires that the methodology used be well explained and justified, leading to reasonable and trustworthy findings. In contrast, when applying dependability, one should focus on finding the level to which the research can be replicated under similar situations (Mays & Pope, 2019).  It can be through obtaining enough information to enable a researcher to repeat the same procedural steps leading to different conclusions.

The Relationship between the Two Criteria and the Epistemological and Ontological Assumptions

Credibility and dependability are tied to the epistemological and ontological assumptions in that they rely on personal knowledge while collecting actual data and conducting analysis. For instance, a teacher can conduct qualitative research on their students' performance then conduct the quality of the research using credibility and dependability as they apply the epistemological and ontological assumptions (Farghaly, 2018). Dependability enables a researcher to repeat the same research based on the reality of things.

An Ethical Issue in Qualitative Research

A potential ethical issue in qualitative research is confidentiality when collecting data. It influences the data collection method to be used (Peters, 2021). When people are not willing to share information face-to-face, questionnaires might be needed, limiting the amount of data gathered. Also, a breach of trust might prevent research from taking place in the future.

Amenable Research Topic

Finally, the amenability of the research topic should align with the scientific study when using a qualitative approach. It helps measure the extent to which the research topic represents an actual research activity (Holton, 2018). Additionally, an amenable research topic ensures that the data can be easily analyzed based on scientific findings.
