Data Warehouse Architecture, Big Data and Green Computing Introduction In looking at information technology as a discipline, different things hit our minds about the same topic. Information technology is a broad subject, and in it, there are other diversified subtopics that one can look at in details and cover the same in length. However, this paper will take a different approach and cover some of the primary topics and concepts in this broad field. The paper will look at data warehouse archi- tecture. The report will discuss the significant components of data architecture, data transformation needed in preparing a data warehouse, and the same funda- mental trends that are currently being seen in this field. In looking at data warehouse architecture, the paper will used examples in details in explaining in depth this very basic aspect and in the process coming up with a detailed explanation of the same (Pearlson & Saunders, 2019). The paper will also look at big data and how the same has been used in different fields, the paper will use specific sectors to extensively discuss this very important concept in the field of technology and explain how different companies and sectors have embraced this in their day to day activities and how the same has helped in making service and goods delivery easy and effi- cient. In the same manner the paper will also in depth cover the demands that big data places on organizations concerning data management technology and how these demand have helped in revolutionizing the big data area and sector and how these demands have helped companies and organizations be better and embrace and use this data in the process of making their day to day decisions. The paper will lastly look at green computing. In this, the paper will discuss the different

ways organizations can make their data centers green considering the fact that currently the computer systems and other electronic devices that are used by com- panies do need huge power supply for them to work efficiently. This will be done using an example of a company that the paper will identify and discuss how the chosen company has embraced green computing and how these has revolutionized it daily activities.

Prompt 1: Data warehouse architecture Data warehouse architecture is a metric used to define the overall data presentation and communication processing ar-

chitecture that usually does exist clients who are computing in the said enterprise (Nadikattu, 2019, p.78). Different data warehouses typically are different. However, these various data warehouses are all characterized by standard vital components. A typical data warehouse usually does consist of four main components. These components include extract, transform load (ETL) tools, central database, access tools and metadata. These different components of a data warehouse do play a sig- nificant role in engineering speed and efficiency so that results that are being searched are gained quickly, and data is analyzed on the fly. The central database is the very major component of a data warehouse. These components usually serve the crucial function of being the foundation of the data warehouse. The central database's function has traditionally been a standard relational database that generally runs on the premise in which the same is used or even in the cloud. However,

this has gradually been transforming due to the introduction of big data. “Due to this, there has risen the need real-time and accurate performance and the fast re- duction in the cost of random access memory (RAM). Also, in-memory databases have recently been used and gaining popularity in recent years, which has made the usage of the central database be reduced.” (Nadikattu, 2019; Salinas & Lemus, 2017) Data integration is the second component that a typical data warehouse does contain. In this case, data is usually pulled or extracted from a system that is the source. After the information is removed, it is generally transformed so that the data that is gotten finally can be aligned to be rapid analytical consumption by using different data integration approaches. These integrations include the extract, trans- form, and load (ETL). Also, ELT can be used in the process of data transformation. Other methods used in transforming data for data warehouse include bulk load processing, data transformation, enrichment services, and data quality methods. These methods do serve a very central role in the process of transforming primary data into the type of data that is needed in the data warehouse. The third major component of the data warehouse is the metadata. Metadata is used to refer to your data. This component plays an essential role in identifying and specifying the source, value, usage, and other features of the datasets in the data warehouse. The most common type of metadata is business metadata.

This usually comes with an additional advantage where it adds context to the already existing data (Salinas & Lemus, 2017, p.10). On the other hand, technical

metadata describes how data can be accessed, which includes where the data is structured and where the same resides. Data warehouse access tools are the last major component of a data warehouse. Access tools play a role in giving the users the freedom to interact with the warehouse's data. Some of these access tools that a data warehouse has include reporting and query tools, data mining tools, application development tools and OLAP tools (Salinas & Lemus, 2017, p.8). In looking at data warehousing, the industry has been developing rapidly in the last years, and different trends have come to be in process. Some of these trends include; the warehouse data set and a new trend where the complex data marts will define and describe business models. These data marts will be designed in a way that they will be able to address specific business functions. The ability that complex data marts have in pulling data from sources that are desperate and at the same time making the data to be easily accessible by businesses is what makes this a new trend. Column-based storage is a trend that is rising rapidly. This trend plays a critical role in retrieving analytical queries, which is preferred because the efficiency that does come with this is faster than its raw-based alternative. Other trends in this field include mixed workloads becoming common, data warehouse automation (DWA) and many others.

Prompt 2: Big data

Big data is a term that used to refer to a collection of data that is huge in volume, and at the same time, the information is growing rapidly or exponentially with

time. Therefore, this data is massive in size, making it impossible for any tools in traditional data management to process or store it effectively and efficiently (Lee, 2017; Salinas & Lemus, 2017). Big data computing is the new emerging data science, which consists of information mining which is multi-dimensional for discoveries in science and analytics in business infrastructure in large scale. This big data is usually characterized by what is referred to as the 5V’s, which do include velocity, volume, variety, value, and veracity (Arora 2016; Bischof & Wilfinger 2019). These advancements, therefore, do grow, especially because, as a globe, the era that we are in is the significant data era. Therefore, the primary function of these technologies is not only to harness the data which is necessary and to make the best de- cisions using the same, which is a crucial function of these advances. Big data computing stems also helps in providing the essential information and the ability to comprehend and at the same time take advantage of its total value, and this will help an organization or a company to run more efficiently and gain more profits. For example, suppose an organization has and uses big data analysis algorithms (Pearlson & Saunders, 2019). In that case, the organizations will be able to analyze mil- lions of SKU’s and use the same to determine the process (optimal) that will increase and maximize profit and at the same time clear the inventories

Big data has been growing in use in many aspects of the industry currently. Many industries in the world today have been trying to implement in trying to give

the customers that they have insights and trying to achieve transparency and producing more straight forward products. Big data accomplish this goal by basically predicting and analyzing the customers' behaviors through the data that is gotten or collected from social media platforms, CCTV footage, and GPS enabled

devices. Big data is also used primarily on insurance companies, whereby using the data collected from these different platforms, the insurance company can re-

tain its customers. Insurance companies have been seen to use big data mainly to training their customers by satisfying their needs. By collecting the data from social media accounts and other platforms where the data can be ordered and presented, the insurance companies' professionals can make decisions on how they can im- prove the coverage services that they provide to suit the needs that their customers do need (Lee, 2017). The needs of the people who are being insured against the risks that are there are always represented and communicated through these platforms. Therefore big data does play a significant role in collecting these data and making it suitable to be used by insurance companies in retaining their clients. Many companies have been utilizing extensive data systems and advancements to pro- gress in many ways and creating opportunities. Companies like Monsanto’s climate corporation use the big geospatial data to analyze weather multi-layered and com- plex changes in behavior (Pearlson & Saunders, 2019). This does go a long way in helping farmers worldwide adopt the new era of climate change. Over a long

time, big data has been placing demands on both organizations and data management technology.

One of these demands that big data sets on management technology is predictive analytics (Lee, 2017). Businesses must access predictive analytics. Organiza-

tions should seek to acquire hardware or software solutions that can discover, deploy, and even optimize predictive models by analyzing big data. This will benefit or- ganizations and businesses in a significant way.

Prompt 3: Green computing

Green computing is a process by which an organization becomes environmentally responsible and ecosystem friendly in using the resources they do have and

their computers. This process is usually done, and it tries to make sure that the resources and the computers they use have less impact on the environment. There are different ways in which organizations can make their data centers green. Some of these ways do include; (Saha, 2018, p.). Green computing is therefore the

basic, eco-friendly and responsible use of computers and their resources. In other words this is basically defined as the method and the study of coming up, design- ing, manufacturing, engineering, disposing and using of computer devices in a certain way that reduces the impact that they do have on the environment. There are different ways or examples of greenhouse computing, these examples include limiting the process of recycling and printing paper, coming up and deploying virtual technologies, purchasing merchandise and other technologies from companies that are more environmentally committed and many other ways that this can be achieved. Green house computing does come with many advantages that the companies that do adopt using this usually enjoy together with the communities that do surround them, some of this benefits that are associated with the adoption of greenhouse computing does include. Green house computing does usually lead to the sustainable computing means reduced consumption of energy that usually ends up to the reduced Greenhouse Gas (GHC) and the reduced usage of fossil fuel (Pearlson & Saunders, 2019). Green house computing is also always referred and attributed to being cost effective, this is usually said to be cost effective due to the fact that it does use less energy and requirements that are needed to cool the systems. Green IT also play a very significant role in helping to create business pro- cesses that are said to be sustainable that are achieved by making sure that they do leverage initiatives that are environmental and at the same time spreading green

awareness that help reduce the consumption of energy and the emission of GHS overall. Conducting a baseline energy audit is one of the processes used in this.

This process aims to provide both real-time assessments of the efficiency and the usage and benchmark future evaluations to guide the planning, which is long term. In this process, it is crucial to ensure that one drill down to a specific system to find out where inefficiencies are within the infrastructure. Another way this can be ac- tualized is by the organization trying to purchase and select green-friendly materials and environment attributes. “Many factors will usually support a smaller carbon footprint and less energy usage, including low emission materials, alternative energy sources, waste recycling, and many others” (Saha, 2018, p.468). There are many changes that an organization can carry out in the process of trying to make the data centers green. Some of these changes include shutting down dormant servers, upgrading air compressors, transitioning to LED lighting, and paper shredding will significantly impact making the data centers green. The organization can also prior- itize reducing the amount of power that data centers use, which can be done by reducing the energy required to control the equipment. The organization can also seek to optimize the data center cooling. This is done by basically ensuring that the data centers are naturally located in places where they are cool, facilitating data center cooling (Saha, 2018, p.467). An example of an organization that has implemented IT green computing strategies successfully is Google Company. Google is known as one of the biggest proponents of green energy, and the company had become a carbon-neutral company as early as 2007. According to the google link site, the company's data centers only utilize half of the power that a typical data center does use daily. The company has become the first company that does procure up to 880 million kWh of renewable energy yearly. Through the process of buying and purchasing the carbon offsets, this basically means that it does offsets the emis- sion that it does generates from the fossil fuels by basically investing in the renewable energy projects that does remove and pull carbon dioxide from the atmo- sphere. Google in the recent years has made and announce that it has made one of the huge big technology commitments that is most ambitious. The company has decided and made a decision to work and run its operations purely carbon free energy by 2030. The company also announced that it has purchased enough carbon offsets that can essentially cancel out all of the planets heating carbon dioxide emission that the company has released since it was founded in 1998.even though the company is seeking to completely rely on carbon free energy the company will need overcome technological hurdles, the company says that it does need batteries that are better in the process of supplying and storing electricity especially during climate conditions when the sun doesn’t shine.

4

The company is also trying to figure out a way in which it can use AI in the process of forecasting electricity of the company and therefore by helping it to become more energy efficient. This is therefore very important for the country since companies like google would remove themselves from the equation from the limited power mix which does include in it the fossil fuels when they are operating. Google therefore as a company that is trying to be adopting greenhouse computing as a technology, the company is thinking about working in areas and places with energy that is healthy and renewable market and favorable energy policies.

Conclusion

Information technology has been growing over the years, and this paper has discussed how the same has been gradually increasing over the many years. Data

warehousing architecture is one of the introductions seen in the information technology sector, which has covered and replaced traditional data management meth- ods. The specific components and tools that do come with this are the ones that do make this unique and different. The importance of adopting data warehousing ar- chitecture has been seen and identified throughout the years and the importance of adopting this does not only help in making sure that the most effective technique is applied in extracting information from data that is raw but also data warehousing architecture helps in ensuring that data is converted to a simple warehousing structure. On the other hand, data mining has also improved and changed how organizations and people personally approach how businesses provide services.

Big data mining helps in improving services provided. However, in making services better and using all these technologies in the service provision sectors, there has been the call to make services better and efficient. It is, therefore, for this reason, that the importance of making data centers greener has been an issue that people and organizations have been considering and google company is just but one of the many companies that have achieved this goal. Green computing on the other hand is has been attributed to being the important development that has been introduced in the recent years, green computing has been attributed in ensuring that the country and the globe as a whole adopts the better and new ways in which computers can be used to help in conserving the environment. And making it a better place. The paper has used an example of google company on how it has successfully adopted the use of green computing in ensuring that it does further the agenda of making sure that more CO2 is taken from the environment and using better ways of creating and using energy.

Conducting a baseline energy audit is one of the processes used in this. This process aims to provide both real-time assessments of the efficiency and the usage and benchmark fu- ture evaluations to guide the planning, which is long term. In this process, it is crucial to ensure that one drill down to a specific system to find out where inefficiencies are within the infrastructure. Another way this can be actualized is by the organization trying to pur- chase and select green-friendly materials and environment attributes.

“Many factors will usually support a smaller carbon footprint and less energy usage, in- cluding low emission materials, alternative energy sources, waste recycling, and many others” (Saha, 2018, p.468). There are many changes that an organization can carry out in the process of trying to make the data centers green. Some of these changes include shutting down dormant servers, upgrading air compressors, transitioning to LED lighting, and paper shredding will significantly impact making the data centers green. The organiz- ation can also prioritize reducing the amount of power that data centers use, which can be done by reducing the energy required to control the equipment.

The organization can also seek to optimize the data center cooling. This is done by basic- ally ensuring that the data centers are naturally located in places where they are cool, fa- cilitating data center cooling (Saha, 2018, p.467). An example of an organization that has implemented IT green computing strategies successfully is Google Company. Google is known as one of the biggest proponents of green energy, and the company had become a carbon-neutral company as early as 2007.
