Ethics are moral values and principles that govern one’s behavior and help to choose what is right and wrong. Laws are rules and regulations enforced to control one’s behavior (Core Differences, 2021). So, if these rules and laws are violated by anyone then he or she will face punishments (years in prison) or penalties (fines) in the court of law. So, a cybersecurity professional, researcher, or software engineer should follow all ethical standards. For example, cybersecurity professionals are always going to have access to sensitive information that is discovered on a company’s security infrastructure. Revealing such sensitive information for monetary gain whether to a competitor or others will result in legal issues such as lawsuits, fines, and tarnishing their reputation. So, keeping such discovered sensitive information should be kept a secret because it is the ethical thing to do.

Laws on the other hand comprise of rules established and made to be punishable by authorities to maintain order. When viewing which one a cybersecurity professional should follow, it becomes clear that both is the correct answer. Although everyone must follow the law, behaving ethically is important in developing relationships, trust, and understanding between coworkers, clients, and the public. Ethics are made to surpass law, and achieve a greater society. That said, it is always important to adhere to local laws, and ensure the personnel and the company are in compliance to avoid any charges. Recognizing legal and ethical frame work standards differ across various states and countries is important. Depending where the company is the individual is looking for, it is important to look into local laws and policies.

Ethics may be defined as a person's, a group's, or a community's adherence to a certain set of rules on appropriate behavior. A set of laws and regulations that have been passed by the government and are strictly adhered to by its citizens at all times. A researcher, software engineer, or cybersecurity specialist should always act ethically by considering the repercussions of their activities. This is an important part of upholding ethical standards. In addition to this, they are obligated to exhibit proper respect for authority by strictly sticking to all of the regulations that have previously been set up.
