Based on the appraised articles, central line associated bloodstream infection is one of the healthcare challenges that need to be addressed urgently as these infections affect people across all ages. It must be understood that central line associated bloodstream infection is a severe infection that patients contracts pathogens such as bacteria and viruses get into their bloodstream via the central line(Conley, 2016). One of the worries that must be considered is the increased incidences of CLABSIs within various healthcare facilities, yet the infections can be prevented. Many studies have shown that increased cases of CLABSIs may be attributed to non-compliance and lack of policies along with insufficient good nursing practices that could prevent such infections. One of the articles appraised argue that the lack of observing the highest level of hygiene is among the factors contributing to the CLABSIs cases.
Further, the articles provided that healthcare facilities provided evidence-based quality improvement on the nursing practice to control CLABSIs. It is worth understanding some of the significant CLABSIs predisposing factors(Conley, 2016). As per the article, the main predisposing factors for CLABSIs increased age, immunosuppression, poor nutritional practices among the patients admitted in hospitals, other infections, antibiotic surgery, certain health conditions such as diabetes and vascular illnesses, impaired skin integrity, multiple invasive procedures, among many other factors. The authors of one of the articles argued that having a better understanding of such factors is forms the basis of developing EBP that could be used to establish long term strategies for CLABSIs control.
According to the articles, it is also wise to consider other factors and challenges of high risk to developing CLABSIs among the patients(Conley, 2016). Such critical and high-risk factors include heavy pathogen colonization at the insertion site, heavy microbial manifestation at the catheter hub, and lack of adequate care of the central line catheter after the insertion is done. Based on the suggestions and recommendations given by the appraised articles, One of the best practices to be implemented to address the issues related to CLABSIs is progressive training of on job nurses on the best approaches and techniques that must be used while providing care to the patient. The training must emphasize that zero CLABSIs is its primary focus. The skills provided must demonstrate to the nurses how best to care for the central venous catheter after insertion is done.
Perhaps the articles suggest that during on-job nursing training on the control and prevention of CLABSIs, it will be advisable for the trainer to provide nurses with extensive knowledge on the CLABSIs prevention bundle. It must be said that the CLABSIs prevention bundle covers the essential skills about management, maintenance and monitoring of the central line insertion in all patient care units in acute care healthcare facilities. The CLABSI bundle tool kit is composed of a wide range of supportive documents, tools, and resources that could be used by nurses and healthcare facilities to implement the bundle(Conley, 2016).
