Principles for Growing Healthy Communities

Of the ten principles, Meg speaks of which ones are most significant to you?  Share your insight with your classmates.

Well, I think all of the ten principles Meg speaks of are very significant to society. However, I find the first principle very substantial because it entails public participation in a given project. This principle states that “People support what they create. Engage the people who care” ("1 People support what they create," 2007). The policy aims at encouraging people in authority to consider the services of the public because they are influential at some point. I agree with this principle because, many at times, we engage in a given project. The result is very encouraging, and we feel we are part of it. Therefore, we do all means possible to ensure the success of the project. However, if we are not involved in it, we will always be reluctant whether to take care of it or ensure its success.

I also find the fourth principle fundamental. The principle states, “To change the conversation, change who is in it” ("4 To change the conversation, change who is in it," 2007). A conversation may be, especially when it is repeated to the same group of people. Therefore, meetings should be done in a way that we engage different groups of people in terms of sessions. For example, in the case of a business meeting, we may sub-divide people into groups and invite them for a conversation at different time intervals. This will change the monotony and monotonous nature of the conversation. You will find that people are active throughout the session, and ideas are exchanged more conveniently.

The other principles which I consider to be useful include the second and third principles. Principle two states, “Create accountability by working on things people truly care about; that matter to them” ("1 People support what they create," 2007). The society is made up of people with different attitudes; hence, there is a need to ensure that everybody is responsible and no foul-play from any quarter. Therefore, I think this principle is applicable in bringing accountability to people. Principle three states, “Through conversation we discover what people truly care about and find shared meaning.” I think this principle encourages leadership to take public opinions more seriously. It is through such sources that positive changes are brought into play.
