BRAINSTORMING TECHNIQUES

As elaborated in our earlier previews, decision-making processes can be classified mainly into two, individual and group decision making processes. A number of dynamics are involved in the group making processes because of the existence of varied views of group members. There exist three main processes involved in the group decision making. These include Brainstorming, the Delphi Technique, and the Nominal Group Technique. The purpose of this discussion is to elaborate these brainstorming techniques in-depth.

The Delphi Technique

In this technique, questionnaires dealing with a particular problem are circulated amongst group members, after which they deliberate the results in the questionnaires. After they have discussed the results, the questionnaires are then recirculated for refining of the various individual responses to achieve consensus concerning the problem. The group members do not necessarily meet around the table to deliberate on the issues at hand rather they are only required to give the solutions through the tailored questionnaires (Green, 2014). Once the problem is identified, group members offer their solutions to these problems, share their solutions, and then review their solution in recognition of other group member solutions until a consensus is reached.

Brainstorming

In this technique, negative feedback is not permitted on any alternative suggested unless all the other group members present their own perceived valuable alternatives. The technique is designed in a manner that encourages group member to give as many options as possible in the decision-making process (Shi, 2015). This, therefore, ensures that the group members articulate their ideas however much they may seem awkward. This method also ensures that no valuable alternative which cannot be overlooked.

Nominal Group Technique

This technique is designed to ensure an equal participation during decision making by each member of the group. In this technique, each group member formulates individual ideas concerning a problem or decision and orally presents these ideas (Hiligsmann et al., 2013). After the completion of the presentation by all group members, they discuss these ideas simultaneously in no particular order and finally through a secret ballot vote for the favorite ideas. The idea that receives most votes then undergoes adoption and implementation by the group.
