Straterra is a medication that is prescribed to children for ADHD. Strattera may help children become more focused and be less hyper. This may create an individual to be able to have better grades in school, be able to participate in more activities, and be able to follow rules better. Some side effects of Straterra are decreased appetite, feeling tired or sleepy, and dizziness. Some side effects that commonly occur with Straterra are trouble sleeping, irritability, and decreased appetite. This medication is not addictive and is not likely to be abused.

When treating an individual within the elderly populations, professionals must take into consideration the individual’s environmental factors, the individual’s physical health, and the individual’s medical history. Individuals within the elderly population may not have as many options as far as medication due to their current medication not working well with mental health medication. There are also some medications which may reduce an individual’s symptoms but may increase their chances of death. All individuals may experience different side effects to medications or different risk of taking different medications but an elderly individual may experience more due to health conditions, disabilities, and their environmental factors.

Haloperidol / Haldol is effective in treating conditions in children such as Tourette’s, autism, schizophrenia and mental retardation. Serrano A. C. (1981). It can be considered a good replacement intervention for other treatments that have proven ineffective. In addition, this medication will assist the child in maintaining calm and supporting their engagement in class and also therapeutic and social activities.

Haloperidol will begin to show effect in some cases as soon as 36 hours to 5 days with full efficacy outcomes becoming apparent at approx. 4 to 6 weeks. There is little to no risk of addiction or dependency. Dailymed (2020)

Noted side effects are “drowsiness, restlessness, dizziness, headache, blurred vision, tremor and weight gain”. National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases; 2012-. Haloperidol. [Updated 2018 Mar 25. Other side effects could include dry mouth restlessness and mood changes.

Children should begin therapy with small does (typically 0.05 mg) and increase as soon as necessary to establish most beneficial dosage. The dosage can also be decreased over time to ensure that the lowest but most effective dosage level is achieved.
