Enviromental Science
SCIN140 Project Outline
Title – Environmental Issue (should be informative by including
the issue and location)
Name and Course #
I. Introduction
A. State the environmental issue and give background information
1. Location where the environmental issue is happening (hometown or another
local place you are interested in
2. History – what led to this becoming an issue
3. How this connects with your ecological footprint from Assignment 1, week 1
B. Environmental Problem
1. Human impacts – what are the social, health and economic impacts of this
issue locally?
2. Environmental impacts – how does this issue affect soil, wildlife, water, air,
etc.? Use ecological principles and scientific terminology
II. Solutions to the problem – For this section, you can either cover 2 solutions that are being
used for the issue at the local level OR you can cover one solution being used and one that you
would recommend. You might choose this if you see the environmental issue is not being
handled well and are able to find great solutions that have worked in other places.
A. Solution Part 1 - Local solution being implemented.
1. How is your local government or other organizations, corporations, etc. dealing
with the problem? Explain by giving details on any procedures, policies,
enforcements, etc. that are already in place to deal with the issue.
2. What are the costs associated with this solution? Cost considerations include
things like actual costs, labor, equipment, policy creation, and “cons” such as the
tradeoffs that might result.
3. What have been the beneficial results of this solution? (This should be specific
to this solution, not the issue as a whole)
B. Solutions Part 2 – Local solution #2 or Recommendation
1. What is at least one other solution that will help with this issue locally? You
can research other methods being used in other areas or offer your own
suggestions, but they must be viable and based on research.
2. What costs are associated with this solution?
3. What are the possible benefits from this solution?
III. Conclusion
A. Final Thoughts
1. 4-6 points that sum up what you learned about how this issue is affecting your
chosen community (separate and numbered here)
B. Future Outlook
1. What is the future outlook for this issue in the community? Is this expected to
get worse/better?
2. Are there plans in place to mitigate future impacts?
IV. References
A. Each reference should be in APA format (see assignment description for helpful
resources) as a separate bullet point.
B. Minimum of 5 references including those from your annotated bibliography,
government resource discussion, and any others you use.
C. Each reference in the list should have at least one in-text citation. That means each
time you use information from a source, add a citation just after. Do this as you go and
it’s much simpler to keep track of! Those will not be here in the outline but rather with
each step above.
