WK 1 & WK 5 DISCUSSIONS
WK 5 INITIAL POST (D. REYES)
In our current environment, children target marketing campaigns, which generate approximately 40 billion annually. The companies recognize this, and they decide to re-direct the advertising to children. More than ever before, children are being socialized as consumers, with children under 14 years are spending approximately $40 billion annually. Marketers have recognized children as arguably the most important consumer of all and use clever campaigns to target and exploit them. I agree that children's advertising rules should be a separate category with special laws and rules explicitly aimed to protect them from inappropriate forms of advertising. In this particular case, the ethical dilemma will be if advertise credit cards for single parents as benefits for them without explained the high interest they will pay in the long run. The company will hide important information and push more vulnerable parents to spend money they don't have and pay more over time. Another ethical issue will be advertising directly to children; this advertising type persuades children to get the latest toy or the newest video game. The children will force their parents to get those items and push them into debt. There should be a regulation on the advertising for children; targeting them will affect the family consumer behaviors and affect them as an adult. Targeting children as consumers affects their family's consumer behavior and help shape their future consumer behavior as an adult.
