Advanced Levels of Clinical Inquiry and Systematic Reviews

Introduction

Clinical Issue

Clinical Question

Do nurses who exercise at least three days a week experience a reduction in stress and anxiety and increased productivity when compared to nurses who do not exercise?

Nurses are the largest in number in clinical settings.

Nurses play a critical role in the frontlines by providing care to the patients .

They also serve a lifeline of encouragement, information, and education of family members of patients.

As a results it is essential to keep nurses healthy in the workplace

Stress results to mental health problems that result to poor productivity, fatigue, decrease in quality of service delivery.

Stress and coping strategies affects health and work performance if nurses

Conti’

Research on exercise and anxiety relationship indicates exercise has the potentiality to prevent anxiety and stress disorders.

Burnout syndrome among nurses results from great psychosocial problems.

Workplace physical exercise is effective in reducing stress levels.

Physical exercises performed with colleagues I at the workplace induces more psychological benefits .

Jakobsen, Sundstrup,, Brandt, & Andersen,2017 found out that nurses who performed physical exercises were less worn out when compared to those who never performed exercises.

Exercising improves psychological factors such as mood and enthusiasm and increased energy levels.

Physical exercise tend to improve depressive symptoms.

Development of PICOT question

Evidence based practices use process of framing, locating, assessing and evaluation and repetition as required.

During my daily practice as a nurse, I heard from colleagues explaining how they feel stressed.

This resulted to burnout, absenteeism and decreased work place productivity.

As such, I was motivated and came up with the PICOT question.

Nurse Databases

I search for some words in my PICOT question in MEDLINE, PubMed ,EMBASE and CINAHL database.

I then narrowed down to key words such as exercise, nurse, stress and anxiety.

I looked for those articles that were more relevant to the PICOT question.

I also found that most articles were in favor of nurses who exercise at least three days a week.

Exercising helps in reducing stress levels and can result to increase productivity.

Articles

Jakobsen, Sundstrup,, Brandt, & Andersen,(2017) found out that nurses who performed physical exercises were less worn out when compared to those who never performed exercises.

Willis, O'Conner, Wyatt, & Heimdal,(2014) found out that increased fitness levels were associated with attenuated response to psychosocial stress.

Cocchiara, Peruzzo, Mannocci, Ottolenghi, Villari, P., Polimeni,& La Torre, (2019) discovered that Yoga s effective in prevent and management of psychological and musculoskeletal issues.

The authors also found that exercising recues stress levels and burnout among nurses.

Al-Tannir, Kobrosly, Elbakri, & Abu-Shaheen, (2017) found out that nurses are likely to engage in smoking and obesity de to physical inactivity. The authors suggest the importance of encouraging nurses to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Systematic reviews

Systematic reviews provide a summary of medical literature.

The reviews synthesize the results of a range of primary studies that are related.

Systematic reviews are essential because they adhere to strict scientific deign that is based on explicit, pre-specified and reproducible methods.

They also provide reliable estimates on the effects of interventions to provide a defensible conclusion.

It also demonstrates where knowledge is lacking

Guides future research
