Mombasa is the country’s oldest town since 900AD and the second largest city in Kenya with an estimated population of 1.5 million people. Since the city is very old, there are various ancient tools and buildings together with art and culture that are so useful for a museum. With a presence of a museum such tools, structures and cultures can be preserved so as to pass the history to the next generation. Therefore, the main reason that makes this city stand out as a site is the availability of ancient materials needed for the museum. It will also encourage and facilitate the search of art and ancient tools rather not discovered for the museum purposes.
The city is a regional cultural and economic hub, which also makes it a regional tourism center. It was an historic trading center and thus it still engages in various kinds of trade. It has the Vasco da Gama pillar, Fort Jesus, Old Mombasa town which are among the various main tourist attraction sites in Africa. Thus, the city being a major tourist attraction site will serve well for the museum as it will have an already ready audience rather market. It will serve well for the many tourists who come to the city for various reasons, other than enjoying the coastal beaches to also have the cultural and historical taste of a classy well-equipped museum. The museum will attract more local and international visitors so as they exploit and learn of their histories together with other people’s history and culture (Chiodozie, 2011).
When it comes to infrastructure and development in the region. It is well equipped and developed to facilitate tourism. There is an International airport together with well channeled roads. An extra-large harbor which links it to the Indian ocean and thus a link to the Middle East through the Indian ocean. It also has classy hotels, for instance the English Point Marine, which is a five-star hotel located at the shores of the Indian Ocean giving the best view of the ocean (Vionna, 2014). These hotels together with vast road networks facilitates tourist need and encourages more and more tourists’ visits. Therefore, having such a city to be the site of my museum will be a great success since it already has the favorable factors that are needed to house a museum. More so it carries history from diverse countries and different reigns. At first it was the original occupants then came the Portuguese rule, followed by Omani rule then British rule before it received independence. The climate and the geographical position of the city is another factor that makes it more favorable and convenient for the museum. Its climate has a slight seasonal temperature variation as it is located near the equator thus easy to adapt to its climate. These reasons make it my choice to site the museum.
