Discussion Question 2: Distinguish among response error, interviewer error, and nonresponse error.
Discussion Question 3: In the following situations, decide whether you would use a personal interview, telephone survey, or self-administered survey. Give your reasons.
a.) A survey of the residents of a new subdivision on why they happened to select that area in which to live. You also wish to secure some information about what they like and do not like about life in the subdivision.
b.) A poll of students at Metro University on their preferences among three candidates who are running president of the student government.
c.) A survey of financial officers of the Fortune 500 corporations to learn their predictions for the economic outlook in their industries in the next year.

Question 2
The text discusses the different types of errors in sampling research, and how an interviewer or researcher can eliminate these errors. Response error, nonresponse error, and interviewer error are errors in research that the textbook discusses. Response error occurs when the participant fails to give a correct or complete answer (Schindler, 2019). Response error typically occurs when the interviewer is lacking accuracy in response to a question. This could be due to misinterpretation of the question being asked, questionnaires that are not specific, or pieces of information that were not asked properly in a way for the respondent to answer. Response error is generated in two ways, when a participant fails to give a correct answer or fails to give the complete answer.
The opposite of response error is nonresponse error. Nonresponse error develops when an interviewer cannot locate the person with whom the study requires communication or when the targeted participant refuses to participate; especially troublesome studies using probability sampling (Schindler, 2019, pg. 584). This is when most, or a large majority of the data is missing in the survey process. Primarily nonresponse error occurs when the respondent is absent or unavailable, when the respondent is unable to participate or refuses to participate. This can create difficulties in the formulation of data towards the end of research because the data will be skewed.
Interviewer error is where there is a form of bias in which the researcher or interviewer administers the survey in person, over the phone, or in words. The text describes interviewer error as "an error that results from interviewer influence of the participant; includes problems with motivation, instructions, voice inflections, body language, question or response order, or cheating via falsification of one or more responses (Schindler, 2018). Interviewer error is fairly common, as it can occur through the interviewer's word choices, facial expressions, or attitude towards the particular topic, etc.
Question 3
a.) A survey of the residents of a new subdivision on why they happened to select that area in which to live, could be done through a telephone survey because it would be easier to talk about why they chose the subdivision and who directed them towards it. Everyone has a different reason as to how they came across a particular market so it would be easier to do so in this manner. I also feel that a self-administered survey would be beneficial as well because they can take it on their own time and choose to provide comments or concerns for future prospective home buyers.
b.) A poll of students at Metro University on their preferences among three candidates who are running president of the student government should be a self-administered survey because it is easily accessible for students. Students can easily scan a QR code or use a link that directly transports them to the survey. Easily accessibility to surveys for students is optimal as they do not want to spend a lot of time on a survey that takes over five minutes. With a self-administered survey, students can easily add comments, feedback, or just simply select the candidate they wish to nominate.
c.) A survey of financial officers of the Fortune 500 corporations to learn their predictions for the economic outlook in their industries in the next year should be conducted through an in person interview survey process. Due to the fact that they are asking for a survey of financial officers in the Fortune 500. This will be more difficult to conduct considering financial officers a very busy and have tight schedules. This survey should be conducted in person because it should be more formal as it is predicting the economic outlook for their industries in the next year. In an in person survey you can also leave room for open conversation at the end that would be unavailable to you in a questionnaire survey.

Question 2
Response error occurs when the recorded data differ from the true data. These errors can come from the participant in the editing, coding, or data entry stages. Interviewer error occurs when the interviewer in some fashion corrupts the data. This can occur as a result of inconsistent treatment of participants or questionnaires, ineffective participant motivation and cooperation created by the interviewer, social differences between participant and interviewer, and cheating. Nonresponse error occurs when the researcher had difficulty in securing interviews from participants who have been selected into the sample, and the non-participants differ from the participants in a systematic way.
Question 3
a. In this scenario, it is more likely that a personal interview will be used because of the compact study area and a topic which will be of high interest to participants. This is especially true if there are a substantial number of questions and a certain degree of free form to the interview. Telephone interviewing would be the second choice.
b. Personal interview or telephone interview for much the same reason as above. The sample approach probably will be a major factor. It it were going to be a convenience sample then personal interviewing at several spots on campus would be adequate. If it is a random sample it might be desirable to use telephone interviewing where possible and personal or mail surveys where telephone contact cannot be made.
