Logos, Pathos and Ethos Persuasive Elements

In persuasive speaking, a mix of logos, pathos and ethos are extremely important. This is because they address different aspects in the audience to win them on the matter that is being presented. However, there are circumstances where one aspect such as logos is greatly used than ethos and pathos. For example, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, different pharmaceutical companies are engaged in the process of search and manufacturing of the COVID-19 vaccines which greater emphasis is paid on logos than ethos and pathos to be allowed to be administered to human beings. FDA which tests for safety, quality and effectiveness of vaccines and certifies them for use, clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccines are run on tens of thousands of participants, which is normally in phase 1, 2 and 3 and scientific data that is generated inform whether they will be accorded emergency use authorization (U.S Food & Drug Administration, 2020). Therefore, for the case of vaccines and in particular, logos is emphasized over ethos and pathos.

In history, a speech that was delivered by Martin Luther Junior at Washington in 1963,” I have a dream” puts greater emphasis on the emotional appeal (Martin Junior, 2013). In the speech, Martin Luther King Junior inspired and aligned with the emotions of hundreds of thousands of Black Americans that were in attendance. It remains one of the greatest speeches with greater emotional appeal in the manner in which Martin Luther King Junior advocated for justice, end of segregation while articulating the United States that was envisioned by the founding fathers of promulgated U.S Constitution (Martin Junior, 2013). On the contrary, there are numerous speeches by former U.S President Donald Trump that applied statistical facts perceived as misleading hence had little appeal to the audience, such as when he claimed to have cut down the cost of F-35 by approximately $600million (Bloomberg Politics, 2017).
