Linville,

You wrote that a code of conduct would be one way to reinforce organizational values and then concluded your post by suggesting that: "The risk that arises when there is a disconnection between the two is that it can discredit the entire organizational values as the outcome of failure in one of the results of the values in inefficiency in fulfillment of the other values." Could you say more about this statement you've made? I'm interested in hearing more about how you see this.

I wanted to share this four-minute video with you, entitled: How to Define Company Values That Support Your Strategy:

This video offers some very practical insights that may be useful in your thinking about how values and behaviors may be integrated into your strategic plan!

Jennifer,

My understanding of how organizational values are helpful in the organization is how the employees provide and display the mission and vision. To the patients and the surrounding communities for which they are providing a service.

The mission is to provide the medical care that the patient comes to our organization is to heal, while the organization is providing a service to the patients they are teaching. Along the way while they are in the process of discovering what is the best practices when giving the patients the best care. The vision of the organization is to provide service excellence. They are building a trusting relationship with their patients and the providers. The employees display integrity and show compassion to the patients and their colleagues. They are making sure that everyone has the feeling that they belong to the organization.

For the organization to keep the course of its strategic plan, it would have to hire employees willing to keep an open mind when it comes to learning, along with having a passion for providing the top level of care catered to the individual patient's needs. In my organization, we are in the business of providing healthcare to our patients. If we are not performing according to the organization's strategic planning, we will not be providing the quality of care accordingly. For the organization to maintain a healthy environment for the patients and the employees, the organization is constantly providing the tools needed for a healthy environment for all parties involved. The healthcare field consists of many cultures and diversities. Everyone needs to display respect for different backgrounds. I believe that God created everyone equally when I provide a service to patients and their family members. I will provide the service in the way God wants me to display him.

Larry,

Organizational values are useful to the strategic planning process because they lay a foundation of what the company and leaders believe in, the same way we lay a foundation before we build a house. Though we do not need to reinvent the wheel when it comes to values, we do need to understand the importance of operating in these values. One of my company's Core Values, in its simplicity, is to "provide a great work environment and treat each other with dignity and respect." Though these should be life values sometimes people put these simple values to the side and let greed, envy, and success! It causes people, myself included sometimes to lose our vision of why we are here and why we do what we do. That's why we must keep our spirit in tune with the highest, and remain grounded in the world, so when the devil tries to use one of its core values, greed and lust to creep in and have us lose sight of the goal.

I tell my team all the time, that through adversity, keep the main thing the main thing. This takes me to my second core value that our company believes in and that's setting diversity to the top and understanding that we can learn from anyone. Our diversity statement is major, but because of the geographical location of the school, it's hard to entice the students so that they can take advantage of what we have to offer them. One of the staples of our mission is to "beat poverty" and help break generational pitfalls through education. Imagine having a family of educated people who are grounded and have an understanding of giving back.

In conclusion, I have a better understanding that having core values in an organization means nothing if you do not have the right people to push them out, and follow them explicitly without conservation. This is important because some people in your company are going to be looking for a loophole or a way to stand outside of the values to push their own opinion.
