Financial Management
Week 3 Discussion
What did you think about what he had to say?
In my understanding, I think that Peter Drucker is emphasizing on the fact that only a few people can make it be in the management of an organization. This is as opposed to politics where people seek high positions of leadership without adequate skills and knowledge to lead the people in the right direction. I have able to learn that in management individuals are required not only to have skills to perform the job but also values that help them to fit in the organization’s environment. I also think that the management soon will be very complex as the individuals in high positions will be involved in difficult positions to provide and interpret information in form of data to their subordinates.
Peter Drucker believes also that few people in the management can read, understand and interpret data into formulating policies and making interventions. According to him, there have been little developments in transform manual labor into a computerized form of labor. I think that it is also the role of the management to convert manual labor a more productive form of labor supply. Work is the most important aspect in the management as it helps in increasing productivity of the organization in providing goods and services to the public for consumption purposes.
What surprised you?
I was surprised by the fact that the only hardworking individuals can make their knowledge work effective and use it to increase the general productivity of the organization. I am surprised that few people in the management cannot be able to use data to provide information for the organization yet they are required to be very competent. I am also surprised that the shift from manual labor to the computerized system has not yet been fully reached despite increased development in technology.
What disappointed you?
There is very little or no chance at the top management spots. This is because these positions are very competitive hence acquiring this position is very difficult for ordinary individuals (Drucker, 2018). The high positions are the most coveted position for many individuals in the job market. I am also disappointed by those individuals who are in top positions cannot be able to interpret data into reliable information.
Skills can be learned through schooling and experience but values which are the most important aspect in management cannot. Despite the enhanced system of management and technological advancement values that guide our behavior and attitudes cannot be passed from one person to another. Values are self-acquired practices that define a person's ability and character and how they relate with others.
What tools can you use moving forward?
Placing emphasis on work will help in increasing the productivity of the organization. Increased awareness of the importance of work by the management helps the organization in increasing efficiency. It also helps the workers as necessary inputs and equipment are provided in time reducing the wastage of resources. An organization should invest in updated technology to be able to increase their productivity and provide quality goods and services. Updated technology also enables effective communication which improves the running of the management operations.
Encouraging a merit-based promotion to individuals seeking higher positions will reduce the number of individuals seeking these positions. Evaluating the performance of the workers helps to increase the productivity of the organization as well as achieving efficiency. This is an important tool as it promotes equality, fairness, and justice for all. Through this, the organization reputation is built while the management acquires skilled and motivated employees.
