Wk 3 Discussion - Core Mechanisms of Group Leadership

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:

Lieberman, Yalom, & Miles (1973) have proposed four core mechanisms of group leadership. These mechanisms (or leader roles) characterize an effective leader and are believed to be important in any group. Reflect on these leadership functions and answers the following questions.

· Clearly explain which leadership function you believe to be your strength. Use specific examples of behaviors/characteristics you displayed in your interpersonal group or any other group of which you have been a member to support your answer.

· Clearly explain which leadership function you believe to be a limitation. Use specific examples of behaviors/characteristics you displayed in your interpersonal group or any other group to support your answer.

· Why is it important to understand how you lead a group?

In the past and during this class I have been the group member that reemphasizes the group assignment in the team discussion thread. I log on Tuesday early morning and copy and paste the assignment to a word document I use as a check off list for my personal use. I always reiterate the fact that I do not want to be the leader I just want to make sure that everyone selects a portion of the assignment and begins to contribute to it. Once everyone has selected a portion, I begin my portion and submit it. My strength I think is that I initiate the process.

My Limitation

My limitation is setting deadlines. Some members of the class only have time to truly dedicate to their assignments during the weekend. I am horrible at setting expectations on submission. I of course live to regret it because on Monday at 7 pm CST I am ready for bed and sometimes still lacking someone’s’ portion. Several times I just enter the information myself so that I can submit for the group. I have tried different tactics and they work with some team members but not with everyone.

Important to understand how to lead

I think it is important to understand how to lead a group because it is a determinant of whether the group will have a successful outcome or not. This week’s reading discussed the democratic leadership, the authoritarian leadership, and the Laissez-Faire leader styles. I know have a visual of how information can get ‘bottlenecked’ in the latter style.
