Compare and Contrast Essay

Which two articles have you chosen to compare and contrast? What global issue do you feel these two articles address? From what perspectives do these two articles approach the issue (economics, social, cultural, historical, political)?

The two articles that I chose to compare is “Mother Tongue and Mute in an English- Only World.” These articles discuss about how language plays apart in our lives. The global issue that I believe both articles address is language. I believe that both articles approach the issue of social and cultural. Language is very important because it helps to betray how others see the world and express our culture within the society.

In what ways are these articles different? In what ways are these articles the same?

In both articles, shares a story about their mothers dealing with the prejudice of others because of their ability to express the English language. In both articles, both mothers were discriminated because they barely spoke the English language. Although, in the article “Mother Tongue” Amy’s mother describes her mother language as “broken or limited” which mean that her mother spoke the English language poorly there was a different between the two mothers in the articles. In “Mute in an English-Only World” Lee’s mother never learns the English language. However, both articles allows us to view how both mothers was face with the outcome or challenge when it came to dealing with their cultural language and the English language of the American culture.
