Application of Transformational Leadership in Obesity-Management Initiative

Transformational leadership enables leaders to induce trust on the part of the followers in ways that motivate them to develop respect and trust, and achieve organizational goals through inspiration that enable them to improve their performance. Nursing leaders that apply transformational leadership adhere to the four main tenets, which include intellectual stimulation, idealized influence, individualized consideration, and inspirational motivation (Boamah, et al., 2018). Apart from these tenets, nurses that apply transformational leadership styles ought to exercise additional competencies such as mobilization, facilitation, and preparation.

Idealized Influence

Nursing leaders ought to inspire their colleagues and subordinates to focus on organizational values, mission and vision that can create meaning in professional and personal processes. Leaders exercise idealized influence by illustrating meaning of the value of organizational goals and objectives by exemplary in which they become the role models that guide colleagues and subordinates on how to accomplish their obligations (Boamah, et al., 2018). Leaders help subordinates to engage in meaningful activities with the intention of cultivating their talents while meeting organizational goals and objectives.

Inspirational Motivation

Nursing practitioners exercise inspirational motivation by articulating organizational mission and vision to subordinates, peers, and clients through by articulating the vision through symbols, imagery, and verbally. Leaders are expected to inspire subordinates in ways that increase their confidence with their work since the leader makes all the goals and objectives clear, and improvises ways of simplifying the manner of expressing ideas and concepts.

Intellectual Stimulation

Nurse leaders show concern of other by examining their talents, weaknesses, needs, and fears, and manipulates their talents to boost their talents according to their abilities. Nurses are expected to apply different perspectives to problem solving by attuning training and empowerment initiatives according to other people’s abilities (Wolfenden et al., 2020). Additionally, intellectual stimulation also entails empowering creative abilities in ways that can help employees.

Individualized Consideration

Transformational leadership focuses on behaviors that improve the abilities of others according to their unique characteristics. For instance, nurses can encourage clients and colleagues in ways that increase their competencies based on their unique characteristics (Wolfenden et al., 2020). Such characteristics include cultural differences, anger management to increase their competitiveness.

Obesity-Prevention Initiative

It is indeed good for Melissa to be concerned about adiposity among school age children. Adiposity is associated with preventable illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and emotional and psychological disorders such as stress and depression due to social segregation. In order to effectively initiate the obesity-prevention program, it is crucial to express competencies of a transformational leaders so as to sufficiently motivate all stakeholders in the program to appreciate the initiative, cooperate, and integrate the strategic activities in their lifestyles (Boamah et al., 2018). The scope of the obesity prevention and management program includes engagement in physical activities for about 11 hours in a week, and taking a healthy diet characterized by low fat and sugar content but high vegetable and whole grain contents. In as much as implementation of the program is easy, Melissa is faced with the challenge of convincing the target population to participate in the program, which requires application of intellectual stimulation. In this regard, I will work with Melissa and encourage her to utilize her competencies including professional knowledge and skills to create strategic ideas of engaging the target population constructively and respectfully so that they can enjoy the activities.

Giving Role-Modelling Support

Apart from stimulating Melissa to apply creativity on obesity-reduction initiative, I will also provide role-modeling support by applying my professional and interpersonal skills to guide her throughout the initiatives. Although Melissa is a professional, it is crucial to apply best practices, evidence-based approaches, and creative ways to create appropriate strategies that can increase the quality of the program so as to make the program more beneficial to the target population (Roussy, Riley & Livingstone, 2020). In view of these reasons, I will apply my acquired evidence-based experiences that I have gathered in my professional experiences gathered in obesity-reduction programs to advise Melissa in ways of improving the program to make it effective.

Communication Efficiency and Passion

Although the motive of the obesity-prevention and management program is activity-oriented, communication and coordination among relevant stakeholders is crucial in order for all scheduled activities to occur in the expected ways. As such, individualized consideration of all the stakeholders including Melissa and the target population is required. In this regard, I will apply emotional and cultural intelligence competencies by communicating, interacting, and behaving in socially responsible ways. In particular, I will be passionate about the initiative, and illustrate optimism regarding my belief that the target populations can attain and maintain healthy body mass index (BMI) (Gourevitch & Thorpe, 2019). I will communicate with all stakeholders in the program respectfully and in culturally appropriate ways. It is also crucial to assess individual characteristics of all stakeholders so as to customize the obesity-prevention and reduction initiative according to the needs and specific characteristics of the target population. My charismatic character would aid in the accomplishment of these objectives.

Stakeholder Motivation

Advanced Practitioner Nurses (APN) are expected to motivate their colleagues and clients in ways that empower the latter to improve their competencies. Therefore, it is crucial form me to empower the Melissa and the target population to take the obesity-reduction initiatives seriously, and improve their health competencies. As such, I will guide the stakeholders on how to appropriately engage in the obesity-reduction and prevention activities by supporting them to act in creative ways that can enable them to take control of the activities. Nevertheless, I have inadequate motivational skills, which implies that I have to cultivate motivational skills before and during the initiative so as to improve on my motivational competencies.
