Identify one significant event or decision from the “modern” era of policing.
The one event that I have identified is the “Patriot Act” that was established in 2001. The
act was put into place as a tool of being able to intercept terrorism. What this act allows is that
properties can be seized for evidence before they even issue a warrant. Also, this allows wire taps
to take place whatever it takes for them to able to do the job and the last thing that I would like to
mention is the increase security measures of the borders. (CopsPlus, 2017).
To what degree do you believe the long-term implications of that event or decision were
known at the time?
I believe that at the time is that us as a country felt vulnerable by the laws that were
already in place and needed to have a way to be able to stop what happened on 9/11/01 from
happening again with the ability to be able to intercept anything that they may deem a threat
because no one saw what was getting ready to take place on 9/11. I think that they were just
looking at that we need a way to be able to identify possible terrorist that may be living here in
the United States and once that we identify them, we need a way to be able to watch their every
move just in case they may be planning something that we can stop.
To what degree do you think unintended consequences—positive or negative—could have
been predicted?
I do think that no one seen that there were going to be such a problem especially with our
borders, although the Act was put into place to help fight with terrorism and was passed in 45
days after the 9/11 attacks and since it was pass so quick there were nothing that was put into
place to protect the ordinary American citizen which opens the door for anyone to become a
