Week 2 Discussion 1
Research methods are procedures for obtaining information on individuals within a
certain demographic. Methods of research are helpful for the purpose of creating a general
explanation, testing the applicability of an existing subgroup or testing the effectiveness of an
existing social policy or program.
Focusing on stratified random sampling, I would use this research the effectiveness of
programs offered to inmate prison. Stratified sampling is a method of sampling from a
population, (criminal-justice.iresearchnet.com, 2016). My form of collecting data would be by
utilizing surveys to gather my information from both inmates and officers.
One advantage to this research method the fact that surveys can be easily distributed to
population. Another advantage if the prison environment may need improvements, this
information could be a step in the right direction to address any problems that may be
underlying.
A disadvantage would be the anonymity. Not gathering information face to face could
possibly taint results. Another would be the refusal of participants in order to gather accurate
information. Accuracy is a strong necessity when gathering information that could potentially be
used for the common good.
