Patient (diagnosis: anxiety, depression and problems in interpersonal relationships)

Case study: 39 year old female, with a history of anxiety and depression. She is an engineer respected in her field. However, she has difficulty with personal relationships. She had previously dated a man for seven years who had not introduced her to his son whom he raised during that time. His son had since gone off to college. A year after she met him his son’s mother moved into the home with he and his son, stating she had no place to go and no income. For the next six years of patient’s relationship, the son’s mother lived in the home with patient and he provided for her. However, he stated they were platonic. Patient was not allowed to visit the home during this six year time period. The relationship was not progressing towards marriage as patient had expected. Therapist was able to work with patient to see that this relationship wasn’t healthy for her and she needed to move forward. She also needs to focus on her job and find pleasurable things to do just to get her mind of the relationship for a while.
