· Traditional Versus Modern British Literature
kkModern British Literature argued for cultural relativism and put an emphasis on subjectivity. Propelled by existential philosophers such as Sartre, the creative output of the times reflected a societal need for each individual to manifest his or own purpose for life. This newfound sense of contentment within uncertainty and ambiguity can also be attributed to the attitudes felt by the general public in the aftermath of two world wars.
Specific characteristics of literary pieces within that time period include chaos, pessimism, moral collapse, loss of identity, and an overall loss of faith in a stable understanding of the world -- a dramatic shift from the ordered and meaningful pieces created within the period before. 2.cj
