YOUR VIEWS ON RESTORATIVE JUSTICE

2

Restorative Justice seeks to elevate the role of crime victims and community members; hold

offenders accountable to the people they have harmed; and restore the emotional and material

losses of the victims (Armour, 2012). I have always been a firm believer that offenders should be

held accountable for their actions and face the victims that they harmed. This, in my opinion is

the only way to make them see how destructive their behavior was. I also believe in victims

being involved in the punishment and getting restitution. However, when it comes to crimes such

as sexual assault and domestic violence, I am against victim/offender mediation and community

service.

As a victim of sexual assault, I would never be able to sit across the table and talk with my

attacker or consent to community service as punishment. I understand that an individual’s

environment or drug abuse can affect their behavior, but they should be punished for their crime.

Most victims need to see the offender held accountable and punished so they can heal. Do I

believe they should be helped? Absolutely, helping them understand why they behave a certain

way, and getting them help can possibly keep them from re-offending, but this can be done while

incarcerated. Maybe as this course progresses, I will learn more and have a different perspective.
