Discussion: The Beginning of “Modern”
Describe characteristics that define the “modern” era of policing.
When Robert Peel who is known as the father of modern policing began advocating for a policing that is up to date and using recent technology, along with establishing London’s Metropolitan Police services out of this there were born three core principles (Longley). The goal of this type of policing is to be able to not only just catch and put criminals in jail but to prevent crime from occurring which will lead to lower inmates and lower crime rates. In order for the police to be effective in crime prevention, they will need the backing of the public that they serve and how this is done is by earning the trust this is done by showing respect to the community having a good reputation by being fair and impartial when enforcing laws plus allow the community some responsibility (Longley).
Explain how these characteristics create a distinction between historical eras of policing.
The distinction between the historical eras of policing was when policing started it was started in a way that there were no training and most of the ones that were doing the policing not only lack the proper training, but they were just people who volunteered. As things progressed policing when from volunteers to being a career or a recognized profession. Things grew from there more training began to get added along with the proper technology and surveillance.
Explain criteria that make modern-day law enforcement effective.
The criteria that make modern-day law enforcement effective is because we are in the homeland security era. Police now in this modern-day era must be even more tech-savvy when the skills of the officers had to be enhanced to deal with such things that include crimes on a mass scale of things (Cox et al., 2017).
