Your written response to this discussion prompt assesses your ability to;

a. describe characteristics of specific disabilities through stages of development over a time frame from young children through adolescence,

b. analyze how developmental stages differ between disabilities, and

c. describe the role of positive behavior supports in prevention and management of challenging behavior.

This discussion also supports your achievement of Course Learning Outcome 2 and the MASE Program Learning Outcome 4.

Cognitive development is the process through which children develop skills and abilities in more or less predictable sequences. While not all children develop at the same rate, they do all pass through common phases of cognitive, physical, and social development. Those that experience a delay in cognitive development paired with deficits in adaptive behaviors are often found to be eligible for special education and related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as intellectually disabled. To help brush up on your understanding of cognitive development, be sure to read the Instructor Guidance prior to responding to this discussion posting.

Initial Post: Using a visual tool such as Smore (Links to an external site.) or EDrawMax (Links to an external site.), create a visual (e.g., Venn diagram, poster, or chart) with the following:

· First, identify which disability you have chosen for the focus of this course (selected in the Post Your Introduction discussion). Next, using information found in your text (Chapters 2 and 3) and information gleaned from the Ashford University Library on your identified disability, do the following:

· Describe the early childhood characteristics of this disability (generally ages three to five).

· Describe the school-aged characteristics of this disability (generally ages five through eighteen).

· Describe the manifestations in behavioral social skills in the learning environment.

· Next, compare these traits with the characteristics of at least two other disabilities.

· Finally, after reviewing the components of PBS, describe how applications of behavioral science, multicomponent interventions, lifestyle outcomes, and systems change apply to the characteristics of the disability you have chosen.

Guided Response: Review the posts of your classmates and the instructor. Substantively reply to at least two peers with your reaction to the initial posts. Discuss how their classifications of behaviors may be in concert with or different than your own.

Though two replies is the basic expectation, for deeper engagement and application of the material, you are encouraged to provide responses to any comments or questions others have given to you (including your instructor) before Day 7. This ongoing engagement in the discussion will deepen the conversation while providing opportunities to demonstrate your content expertise, critical thinking, and real-world experiences with this topic.
