Research Proposal – The Assignment For this assignment, you will write a research proposal. A research proposal is an explanation to yourself – and your instructor – about how you want to proceed in working on your topic. Remember that your final topic may not be exactly the same as the one you outline in your research proposal, however, careful thinking about your research intentions is critical to focusing your work for the remainder of the term. Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to help you articulate your research question, focus your reading, and consider how your paper might be organized. Process: The work you have already done has provided you with a foundation for writing a successful research proposal. Step 1. You wrote a first draft of your research proposal. Step 2. You learned about differentiating between too broad, too narrow, and right-sized research questions.

You practiced expressing your own research question in a way that is right-sized. Step 3. You have conducted a significant number of “quick reads” of the sources on your Working Reference List. Details: Your research proposal must:

 be uploaded to the assignments folder on D2L

 explain your topic

 state whether your paper will be 1) argumentative or 2) analytical

 include your right-sized research question

 discuss why you think your research question is neither too broad nor too narrow

 include a paragraph about how your quick reads are informing your preliminary approach to organizing your work

 be a minimum of 150 words and include a word count at the end It is not necessary to:

 write an introduction or conclusion. Begin with a direct explanation of your topic.

 have a detailed and specific plan for your entire final paper. At this stage, you only need an approach.

 cite your sources – though if you feel it will improve the clarity of your discussion, you may do so Assessment: To receive a grade of A, your Research Proposal must be completed on time and follow all the guidelines given in the details section of the assignment. Weighting (=grading importance): This paper will be weighted equally with approximately three other short writing assignments that you will complete this term. The exact percentage will depend on the number of short writing assignments we actually complete, but the total percentage for all of them together is 25%. Thus, this paper will likely represent about 6% of your overall grade.
