The purpose of the journal is to explore the nursing ad counseling theory’s that govern my practice and develop goal and objectives for my practicum experience.
Nursing Theory
The nursing theory that I chose to guide my practice in psychotherapy is Erickson’s modeling and remodeling theory. This theory is comprised of concepts from the Theory of Hierarchy of Needs, theory of psychosocial stages, cognitive development, and general adaption syndrome (Petiprin, 2016). The reason this theory appeals to me is because it combines information from many other highly respected theories and takes a holistic approach to therapy. The modeling and remodeling theory requires the therapist to accept the client for who they are and encourages the client to grow and develop at their own pace (Alligood, 2013). The theory is additionally based on the premise that all people have basic needs that can be satisfied but only within the contextual framework of the individual (Alligood, 2013).
Counseling Theory
There are many good theories regarding psychotherapy but the cognitive behavioral theory (CBT) is one that I would use in my daily practice. This theory involves the client’s perception and thoughts on how situations influence their emotional, behavioral, and psychological perceptions (González-Prendes & Resko, n.d). With this theory the client learns to evaluate their negative cognitions and correct their thinking decreasing their distress (Beck Institute, 2016).
Practicum Goals and Objectives
The three goals for this practicum are: to assume complex and advanced leadership skills that guide change, to further develop my diagnostic and reasoning skills, and further develop my therapeutic communication skills. The three objectives that I have for this practicum are: to perfect my skills in building a trusting client relationship, to be an expert in cultural competency regarding my clients, and to understand which therapeutic plan is most appropriate to implement.
I plan on accomplishing my goals and objective by the end of the semester and to continue to revise my goals so that I can be the best practitioner that I can be for my clients.
