Place

Borough Park: located in Brooklyn, new york

Has a man-made borders

Borders:

Bensonhurst to the south

Bay Ridge on the southwest

Sunset part to the west

Kensington and Greenwood commentary to the northeast

Flatbush to east

Midwood to southwest

Borough park, as a community, is located in Brooklyn, New York. Bensonhurst borders it to the south, bay ridge to the southwest, sunset park in the west, Kensington and greenwood cemetery to the northeast, Flatbush to the east, and Midwood to the southeast. Maimonides Medical Center is located at 4802 Tenth Avenue, Brooklyn, serving as the leading acute care health facility like hospitals, doctors, dentists, and specialists, within its borders. All facilities are accessible by car and public transportation, including subways and buses.

2

Place Cont.,

Limited garden landscape and few animals

Few stray cats, no dogs or rats

Numerous private schools and few public schools

No reports of overcrowding in public schools

School buildings, public and private, appeared in good repair.

One noted limited garden landscaping and very few animals while walking through the community. The lack of space for landscaping lessens the threat of poisonous plants to threaten children and animals (Saul, 2017). There are also a few stray cats and no dogs or rats, limiting animal disease spreading. Moreover, numerous private schools surrounding the area but only a few public schools. No reports of overcrowding in the public-school system, and all school buildings, private and public, appeared in good repair. In some instances, there was limited space for children to play outside.

3

Police and public protection

Public protection is evident

The NYPD 66th precinct at 5822 16th avenue

Has various volunteer neighborhood patrols

Several volunteer ambulance services

Closet fire department at sunset park

Public protection is evident with numerous EMS services, including several volunteer ambulance services. There is one police precinct or the NYPD 66th Precinct located at 5822 16th avenue (Hymowitz, 2017). The 66th Precinct ranked 3rd safest out of 69 patrol areas for per-capita crime in 2010. As of 2018, with a non-fatal assault rate of 19 per 100,000 people, Borough Park's rate of violent crimes per capita was less than that of the city as a whole (Hymowitz, 2017). Borough Park also has various volunteer neighborhood patrols that are mostly made up of the Hasidic community members. There is a volunteer ambulance group composed of emergency medical technicians and paramedics. The Hasidic community has been able to form ties with the local authorities.

People

At 4.30 pm, mostly children and women were on the streets

Women dressed modestly and tastefully

They had long jackets, hats, and skirts

Students were wearing backpacks and uniform

Workers were also leaving hospitals wearing scrubs.

At 4.30 pm, mostly women and children were on the street. Many of the women were dressed modestly and tastefully with long skirts, jackets, and hats. Many students in the streets were wearing uniforms and backpacks (Hymowitz, 2017). Near Maimonides, many workers were leaving the hospital wearing scrubs. The few men encountered varied in appearance from suits with long coats and hats to plainclothes or scrubs. As of 2016, the median household income in Community District 12 was $45,364. In 2018, an estimated 28% of Community District 12 residents lived in poverty, compared to 21% in all Brooklyn and 20% in all of New York City (Hymowitz, 2017). Less than one in fifteen residents (6%) were unemployed, compared to 9% in the rest of both Brooklyn and New York City. Based on this calculation, as of 2018, Community District 12 is considered to be a high-income relative to the rest of the city.

5

People cont.,

A large percent t of the population was white

Few observation of other demographics

Resident at the center are mainly whites

Other groups are dispersed throughout

Ethnic and racial characteristics are evident at schools and synagogues.

The population observed was overwhelmingly white, with some Native American, Hispanic, African American, and Asian people were surveyed. The groups are residentially located with the highest concentration of white residents at the center of Borough Park and other groups dispersed throughout the community with a concentration of non-white residents at the edges of Borough Park (Saul, 2017). The city's racial and ethnic characteristics are most evident at synagogues and private schools, many of which depict the institution names in Hebrew or Yiddish. On the fringes of Borough Park, one saw one store with Chinese characters on the awning. One did not see churches during the survey. The Synagogues varied by groups, including Hassidic, Sephardic, and Ashkenazi Jewry.

6

Environment

No large industrial factories

Small industries include:

photo developing company

paint stores

Artisan stores

Dry cleaners

Chemicals used affects individuals and workers

Roads were marked but narrow.

There are no large industrial factories in Borough Park. The smaller industry that affects the environment mainly consisted of paint stores, photo developing companies, dry cleaners, and artisan stores such as monument and window stores. The chemicals used in paint, photo, and dry cleaner stores can affect workers and individuals living the apartments above the stores (Chronopoulos, 2020). The roads are well marked but narrow and are not adequate to accommodate the high volume of traffic associated with the large population living in Borough Park.

7

Housing

Architecture and housing style varies

Apartments buildings and family homes are similar

No vacant house

Limited retail space

Some homes and apartment were quite old

New apartment buildings and homes can also be seen.

The housing and architectural style of houses varies by section of the neighborhood. Apartment buildings and Multi-family homes are most similar. One could not see any vacant dwellings (Saul, 2017). There was also very limited retail space, and no apartments being advertised for rent. The apartment buildings and homes can be quite old and older, not being uncommon. However, new homes and apartment buildings can be seen sporadically, creating a montage and varying array of architectural styles throughout the community. Most houses and apartment buildings are in good to excellent repair.

8

Common Areas and space Use

Hang out places appear to be:

Yeshivas

The park

Sidewalks

Restaurants

Hangout differ with economic status

The land is mainly residential and commercial

Most space is private.

The main "hangout" places appear to be yeshivas, the park, sidewalks outside residences, and restaurants in the area, mainly pizza shops and ice cream stores. "Hangouts" may differ by socioeconomic status since eating out is expensive (Saul, 2017). Public areas such as the park, sidewalks, and restaurants are open to strangers. Land in Borough Park is mainly residential and commercial with no large industrial buildings and very limited public parks. Most of the space is private, and there is almost no open space, even on private residences.

9

Transportation

Members of the community own cars

Some use public transportation

Others walk

Roads and streets are able to facilitate transportation

Narrow stress is also common

Major avenues run from north to south.

Members of the community own cars, use public transportation or walk to get around and in and out of the community (Chronopoulos, 2020). The streets and roads can facilitate transportation through the community, though due to the population's high density and narrow streets, congestion is common. Borough Park's major avenues run from north to south, and its central shopping districts are on 13th, 16th, and 18th Avenues. The B8, B9, B11, and B35 new york bus routes serve the area as well as the private B110 bus route to the predominantly Jewish neighborhood of Williamsburg.

10

Service centers and stores

Many communities run health facilities and social agencies

Limited recreation centers

Many offices for dentists, specialists

Resident shop locally

Many food shops and restaurants stores

Many communities run social agencies and health facilities. However, there are limited recreation centers and after-school activities. There are many offices for doctors, dentists, and specialists, generally on the first floor or basements, of multi-family residences. One did not observe any palmists or spiritualists, moreover, many residents shop locally (MOORE, 2018). There are many food shops, restaurants, home furnishing shops, clothing, music, toy, artisan shops, medical supply stores, and specialty stores in the area. Community members walk, drive, or take public transportation to shop in the community.

11

Street sense and community growth

Many people were children, students, women, and mothers.

At the hospital, there were men and women.

In the evening was when people were expected.

Few remodeled homes

Some garbage's on the sideways.

No abandoned cars or homes

The majority of people on the street were women, mothers, babies, children, and students. Near the hospital, both men and women wearing scrubs or plain clothes were exiting the hospital. All people were what one would expect to see on the streets in the evening. People were dressed appropriately for the time of day and location (MOORE, 2018). The only animals that one saw on the streets were a stray cat or two. One comes across a few remodeled homes or newly built apartment buildings. Street repairs were just completed, and there were limited political posters. There was some garbage on the sidewalks, but otherwise, one did not observe any abandoned cars, real estate signs, or abandoned houses—many houses and buildings house stores on the bottom or basement floors.

12

Schools

Public schools are operated by new york department of education

Elementary schools and student drains

Classes are small

Many children attend yeshivas

Montauk schools also serve Asian students.

The new york department of education operates public schools. 180 Homewood School, a zoned public K-8 school, receives many bused-in students from other neighborhoods, including Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst. Many elementary schools have had mixed results from this student drain. Many children in the community attend yeshivas (Hymowitz, 2017). Classes are small, the hallways quiet, the principal and assistant principal know every student by name. Most Borough Park neighborhood parents send children to yeshivas. Virtually all the large population of school-children born into Borough Park's Hasidic families attend local yeshivas for boys and Bais Yaakov type schools for girls. This had diminished the student population of local schools, such as The Montauk Intermediate School.

13

Politics and media

Few political campaign posters

Party affiliation was not apparent

Available newspapers included

Yated

Jewish press

Hamodia

Magazines include:

Bina

Jewish action

Ami

Walking through Borough Park is a multisensory experience.

Few political campaign posters were posted on houses or in store windows (Chronopoulos, 2020). Party affiliations were not readily apparent. Widely available newspapers include Hamodia, Yated, and the Jewish Press. Magazines available include Ami, Bina, Jewish Actions, and Binyan. Hebrew and Yiddish newspapers and magazines are also available (Chronopoulos, 2020). Print media is the most important. Walking through Borough Park is a multisensory experience. The elevated subway trains, traffic, honking, and busses all make a lot of noise. Borough Park does not smell. The higher avenues and streets are much quieter and have more greenery, making them look lovely and inviting.

14

Healthcare statistics

Leading causes of premature death are cancer

The diseases affect both females and males

They affect people from age 44 to 65

Cancer and heart disease are the two leading causes of death

Based on taking Care Borough Park, published by the New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDHMH), the leading causes of premature death in the community of Borough Park is cancer, ranking at 24%, and then heart disease ranking at 21% (Colon-Berezin et al., 2019). These diseases, which cause premature death, affect both males and females, mainly between the ages of 44-65. Cancer and heart disease are the two leading causes of death in both genders at 64 and above.

15

Conclusion

Community meets most of WHO healthy elements

Has a high-quality physical environment

Community is non-exploitative and strong

The population is involved in health initiatives

participation in health initiatives, improved cleanliness, increased income, community safety

From the survey, the community meets most of the WHO Initiative Healthy Cities Elements. The community has a high-quality physical environment and a stable and sustainable ecosystem (Colon-Berezin et al., 2019). The community is strong, non-exploitive, mutually supportive, and meets basic water, food, shelter, and safe work environments for the population. The population is involved in health initiatives, as indicated by dropping risk factor statistics. Moreover, the economy is diverse, innovative, vital, and self-contained. Continued improvement and increased participation in health initiatives, improved cleanliness, increased income, community safety, and constant access to healthcare are all long-term elements that should continue to be addressed.
