In Pilsen, there’s many murals around the community and in some cases you are able to see a few religious murals like St. Jude or Our Lady of Guadalupe. The community of pilsen is filled with about 5 Catholic Churches and a few of these churches are also schools. The churches do bilingual mass, spanish, english and polish mass and have clubs available for the community.

Politics
Based on Block Club Chicago, Pilsen is a Democratic neighborhood. Data from the 2020 Presidential election shows a breakdown of votes for Biden and Trump. Biden received 84.78% of the votes while Trump received 13.07%
There was a massive protest over the police killing of George Floyd, Pilsen was one of the communities that took part of the Black Lives Matter protest back in 2020. The community takes into consideration many different issues that they they feel very strong about like racism, immigration and social justice. There’s many different murals that lets people know where they stand and what they believe in. Many of these murals can be found along W. 18th street & Western
Boundaries
Pilsen is located in Chicago lower west side and is bound by 16th street to the north.
It is about 2 ½ miles southwest of Chicago downtown.
There’s the Chicago River, a railroad and I-55 located West of western Avenue.
Housing and zoning
Sales prices for homes and apartment buildings range from $180k to $1M with 1-8 bedrooms and 1-4 bathrooms
Rent ranges from $1,200 to $3,500 with 1 bedroom/studio apartments-4 bedrooms and 1-2 bathrooms
Multi-family dwellings are more prominent than single-family homes
~20 homes/buildings for sale and ~200 apartments for rent
By observation, Pilsen is popular among young business professionals, college students, and young families due to its affordability and proximately to elementary schools
Open Spaces
Pilsen does not have many green spaces in comparison to the population
The community is highly developed with residential, business spaces, and industrial space. However every school in the neighborhood has a playground/park. Five parks are also scattered throughout as well.
There is no minimum lot size to be found. However, Pilsen has 1.1 acres of park land per 1000 residents compared to Chicago’s of 2.8.

Harrison (carter) Park, is one of common areas where people gather for walking, biking, and walking their dogs.

Gang Activity: Pilsen is the neighborhood that has the most rival gangs - Ambrose, Bishops, Latin Counts, Party People, La Raza, and Satan Disciples have all ongoing rift.

Air pollution has been a problem for over 10 years for Pilsen. The community has been inquiring about their air emissions due to smelting facility in the area
Active project: EPA outdoor quality
Completed projects:
East Pilsen Area Soil Site - clean up of lead contaminated soil in 15 residential properties in 2018.
Pilsen Area Soil Site - removal activities to clean up lead contaminated soil known as Operable Unit 2 in 2018.
Water pollution - nearly 80 percent of properties in Pilsen are hooked up to service lines made of lead. PERRO was granted by the Great Lakes Alliance to distribute free water filters to the community of Pilsen
Crime Rates: 22% higher - 3,029 per 100k people.
Signs of community decay: there are abandoned buildings and cars around in Ashland & 18th street. Some trash are also visible in certain areas of the community. Crosswalks, traffic lights, and sidewalks are visible all through out in the community.
Pilsen is a safe community compared to other neighboring cities. No signs of homelessness and panhandlers inside the community.
How do the community safety issues impact your identified community problem or issue?
The community issues that were identified was more on lead poisoning, through soil and water contamination. This is a serious problem that would affect majority of its people and the community itself, higher risk of getting sick from lead poisoning that would lead to hospitalizations.

There are many multinational retail shopping centers and numbers of family owned grocery stores.
Based on observation, most residents in the community walked to the grocery store while few residents drove to the stores as most of the stores are within close proximity.
There are government subsidize grocery centers and other charities food pantry stores.
There are numbers of fresh produce stores in the community, an example is the Cermak fresh market.
Healthier restaurant outnumbers fast food restaurants in the community, while most restaurants are Mexican- American cuisines.

Service and Service Centers
Pilsen is endowed with numerous recreational centers. One of them is Harrison park, located at 1824 S. woods St., there are segments of recreational centers, fitness and other exercise service centers. these facilities includes:

Basketball courts, e.t.c
Other fitness center in the community includes Pilsen Wellness Center.
The facilities are well equipped and base on observation, the facilities were well utilized.
There are numbers of entertainment locations in the community, such as;
National Museum of Mexican art.

Pilsen has 15 public and four private schools ranging from elementary school to high school and one higher education institution, the Arturo Velasquez Institute located on Western Avenue.

About 30% of Pilsen residents do not have access to vehicles so they depend on public transportation (Pink line train, 16 bus, and 18 bus)
However, in 2020, there has been a 51% decrease in riders on the 18 bus, 55% decrease on the 60 bus, and 59% decrease in riders on the pink line (18th train stop)

Pink line runs between 54th/Cermak and Downtown from approximately 4am to 1am on weekdays and 5am to 1pm on weekends
18 bus runs between 16th/Cicero and Roosevelt station from approximately 6am-8pm on weekdays, 7am-7pm Saturday, and 8am-7pm Sunday
60 bus runs between Blue Island/26th (Cicero/24th Pl) and Harbor Dr/Randolph from approximately 4am-11pm on weekdays and Saturdays and 5am-11pm Sunday

According to the chicago department of health, stroke, diabetes and heart related diseases are top 3 major health problems in the community.
Community outreach work, promote maintaining healthy lifestyles through access to healthy foods, regular exercising and health care service.
Pilsen adult between the ages 18 and 64 have significant less insurance coverage than chicago residents overall.

Pilsen has a large network of Non-Profits and as of 2015, there were 87 registered organizations.

Pilsen is a family-oriented community with strong churches and institutions
Pilsen is one of Chicago’s oldest communities and has a long standing traditions of arts and culture.
Pilsen has an excellent transportation resources
5 Potential Community Risk Factors (weaknesses)
Many residents are not aware of the health services available in the community, including mental health services.
Pilsen has 1.1 acres of park land per 1000 residents compared to Chicago’s of 2.8 acres, meaning that green space and open spaces are significantly limited.
Pilsen has a lower percentage of homeowners than the City of Chicago by 48%. Long-term residents are being evicted from their homes due to landlords and investors refurbishing and selling properties for profit.
Environmental concerns of air pollution due to the Pilsen Industrial Corridor and lead toxicity in soil and water main water lines.
Loss of neighborhood character due to gentrification.

Connecting residents in need with the appropriate resources and services available in the community through community education and outreach. Recommended to find more space for non-traditional open spaces
El Paseo Community Garden, an established community garden, was expanded with the help of NeighborSpace who bought a vacant neighboring lot owned by the city for $1. NeighborSpace owns the property on behalf of El Paseo.will own the property on behalf of El Paseo.

Recommend the residents of Pilsen to read up on the latest news pertaining to the concentration of lead in the area. The Illinois EPA placed a lead monitoring system in the neighborhood and conducts regular air monitoring.
