In this course, you will use APA Style Central, which will be available in all your future IWU courses.  The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2010) is the required format for most IWU submissions. American Psychological Association (APA) standards allow you and faculty alike to communicate about your research. The rules of APA help to avoid confusion and provide clarity with regards to resources. Using APA format will benefit you throughout the rest of your program and beyond. APA format is required in all your IWU courses; all instructors are aware of this and will assess your work accordingly.

In this activity, you will be completing the first three steps toward writing your essay:

Step 1:  Review a model essay Step 2:  Choose a topic Step 3:  Create a title page

1. Review this Model Essay .  Take some time to analyze it carefully.  Think about the structure of the essay, the format of the different parts, and how the topic is addressed.  If you follow the guided steps in the next workshops, your essay can turn out this well, too!

2. Choose a topic of interest that is related to your program or field of study from the Sample Research Topics document.  Use your topic as the title of your essay.  You may decide to edit this title as you develop your essay in upcoming workshops.

3. Create a title page in APA Style Central by carefully following the guided steps in the APA Title Page video.

4. Review the IWU APA 6e Guide .  This official guide provides instructions for APA formatting, general and specific writing expectations, and another sample paper.  The IWU Off Campus Library also has an APA Resource page.  As you develop your writing skills in upcoming courses, these resources will come in handy, however, you can also use digital tools, such as APA Style Central to format successfully.

5. Submit your completed title page using the Dropbox by the end of the workshop.

b. Search for a Bible verse that relates to the concept of “wisdom.” Search on BibleGateway ( https://www.biblegateway.com/ ) and post the one that speaks most to you. Include this verse in your original post.

5. Read and respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings, as well as all follow-up instructor questions directed to you, by the end of the workshop.
