Why lead Like Jesus?

Professor’s Note: You have been offered a clear contrast between Greenleaf’s Servant Leadership, which is humanistic, relative, and without foundation vs. Biblically based Servant Leadership rooted in the life of Christ.

One question remains: Why lead like Jesus? Are there good, practical reasons for leading like Jesus?

Spiritual Reasons for Leading Like Jesus

As a philosophy of leadership, servant leadership may be considered one option among many others; but as a theology of leadership, it is a mandate for all who call Jesus Lord. Foundational to tapping into the essence of leading like Jesus is embracing a life purpose of loving God and loving and serving people.

There are several spiritual reasons for leading like Jesus.

First, servant leaders seek the Kingdom to for finding results and building relationships. Leading like Jesus requires leaders to follow God. “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

Second, servant leadership honors God and His commandments. Servant leadership is a concrete expression of a daily commitment to live out the Word of God and the will of God, thereby advance the kingdom of God. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)

Third, servant leadership puts the love of Jesus into action. Leading like Jesus requires leaders to continue to walk closer and closer to Him in a surrendered relationship of trust and love. It is important to believing in Jesus’ enduring love and accepting the call to follow Him.

Fourth, servant leadership models Jesus to others. To lead like Jesus, leaders make choices to serve or be served, which takes on added importance if leaders remain insensitive and aware of who may be watching and who leaders claim to represent.

Practical Reasons for Leading like Jesus:

Provides Better Leadership

Closes the Gap Between Success and Significance

Practical Reasons for Leading like Jesus

From a practical point of view, servant leadership best serves the dual objective of effective leadership – results and relationships.

One practical reason for leading like Jesus is that servant leadership provides better service. Organizations led by servant leaders are more likely to take better care of their relationships with customers and colleagues.

Another practical reason for leading like Jesus is that servant leadership provides better leadership. Organizations led by servant leaders are less likely to experience poor leadership. Servant leadership enables humility to overcome incompetence.

A third practical reason for leading like Jesus is that servant leadership closes the gap between success and significance. People and organizations led by servant leaders are more likely to function well in values-based environments where success and significance are available at all levels. When leaders focus on significance first, their emphasis is on their people. Through that emphasis, success and results will follow.

It’s not about you!

Life with God-grounded confidence

Life full of integrity

Will of God for life

Leadership Legacy Reasons for Leading Like Jesus

Believe it or not, every leader leaves a leadership legacy because we all influence the thinking and behavior of other people in our organizational leadership.

There are several challenges that exist when leading like Jesus leaders leave leadership legacies.

The first challenge for a lead like Jesus leader is to remember, it’s not about you!

Leadership is an act of service. It is important for Lead like Jesus leaders to recognize that it is not about you. Leadership is about following the servant leadership example of Jesus. What God wants is what matters.

The second challenge lead like Jesus leaders face is living life with God-grounded confidence. Many leaders are apprehensive and out of that insecurity and fear, these key issues have not been addressed in their lives even though they attempt to lead in every facet of life. Disaster will be the result.

Another challenge lead like Jesus leaders face is living a life full of integrity. Not only do leaders have to talk about being leaders, but they have to live it. Remember, leadership is about service not about being served. Jesus talked about serving and served. The best example of His service is when He washed and dried His disciples’ dirty feet. Hence, leaders must practice what they preach!

A fourth challenge lead like Jesus leaders face is submitting to the will of God for life. When leaders have leadership questions, they can go to Jesus for the answer; thereby, first submitting to His will for their lives as leaders. Jesus’ service of washing His disciples’ feet was done to show them that “no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” (John 13:16-17)

Why lead like Jesus?

Leading like Jesus Begins with You

Do not make the mistake of first trying to change other leaders with whom you work. Focus on yourself. Be the change you want to see in others.

Leading like Jesus begins with you

Do not make the mistake of first trying to change other leaders with whom you work. Focus on yourself. Be the change you want to see in others. If your organizational culture does not easily let you talk about Jesus, don’t worry. Just behave as He did and become a great servant leader. Then when people are attracted to the way you lead and they ask you about it, you are free to share with them whom you follow. When people look at you, let them see Jesus. If they like what they see, then they will want to know where that came from; They are ready to learn and are good candidates for your speech.

In case of fear,  ”Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;  and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

In case of temptation, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

In case of an attack of pride, “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.” (Romans 12:3)

When you need to check your values, Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising loving, kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.” (Jeremiah 9:23)

When you need to take accountability for a mistake and repent, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

When you need guidance, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
