PEERS POST:

ELLs are students are unable to communicate fluently or learn effectively in English, who often come from non-English-speaking homes and backgrounds. English language learner (ELL) are people who have limited proficiency in the English language this can be children and adults of all ages. ELL were not born in the United States and speaks native English. “People who are ELL moved from their birth country to another country for better opportunities etc.” (Piper, T. (2015) For ELL moving to the United States can be quite the adjustment think about the challenges faced such as needing help, but it is difficult to interpret the need that can be frustrating.

The four domains are listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students must do well in all four domains to attain academic proficiency in a language. “It can be difficult for students to achieve equal competence in all four domains.” (Piper, T. (2015) “Productive skills speaking, and writing tend to be more challenging verse reproductive skills listening comprehension and reading.” Reading is actively making meaning from written input.

· Ex. Reading students will interpret the meaning of a word.

 Listening is actively making meaning from verbal input.

· Ex. Understanding and interpreting

Speaking is communicating information through spoken word.

Ex.

· Correct Pronunciation;

· Body language, Tone, and Facial Expressions

Writing is a form of communication through words

Ex. Knowledge of forming letters. However, a lot of children when younger will form a letter backwards and upside down until age 7 years old.

For ELL students if speech is difficult then listening can be challenging because the language is not understood, meaning one does not understand the definition of the vocabulary. For teachers who have no knowledge of how to translate or teach ELL students implementation of plans can be challenging. Do to the NCLB act every student must receive the accommodation's needed to help them learn. ELL needs explicit language instructions, modeling, and scaffolding.

For ELL students this impedes their ability to learn material and their misplacement in an academic setting. This can cause students to have low self-esteem, and lack of motivation needed to persevere through challenges. ELL students struggle academically for substantial number of reasons, learning a new language, class material, and the material is implemented in English language. ELL students will experience levels of culture shock especially with being in unfamiliar and new environments.
