When to use which test for your analysis for Class 9 of Hypothesis Testing
Compare Means are for interval, ratio and ranking variables because only these variables have means.
1) One sample t-test to compare one variable’s mean to a certain value. E.g. we compared whether the mean income of Santa Fe Grill customers equal $80,000.
2) Independent sample t-test to compare one variable mean between two different groups/samples. For example, we can compare whether Santa Fe Grill and Jose’s Mexican restaurant customers have the same average income.
3) Paired sample t-test to compare the one same group for two different variable means. For example, we can test whether Starbucks male customers drink the same amount of coffee versus tea.
4) One-way Anova to compare one variable mean among three or more than three different groups. E.g. in the Santa Fe Grill data, we divide the customers into three groups:1) who travel within 1 mile; 2) who travel from 1-5 miles; 3) who travel more than 5 miles, and then we compare whether their mean likelihood of returning to restaurant is the same or not.
5) N-way ANONA to compare one variable mean among two or more than kinds of independent variable groups. E.g. instead of only comparing customers’ likelihood to come back restaurant among three groups of people based on their distance to the restaurant, we can also compare the groups’ likelihood to come back based on their gender in the mean time. Hence we can examine the interaction effect between the gender and distance to restaurant on the likelihood of returning to restaurant.
Cross-tabs are for nominal variables because only since these variables do NOT have means.
